Took a 197 for a spin yesterday.... low q pics.

Gave it a proper push once warm, renault were kind enough to let me take out one of they're two new arrivals.

It'd be a bit unfair for me to comment on handling as the salesman said, due to mine being on coilovers.... but as for everything else. Where shall i begin.

Inside, is huge. Seats, altho not leather, were actually VERY comfy, and hug you so much better than the current 182 and trophy recaros!

Interior looks **i say looks** alot better put together, but after 20mins, i had a buzzign at low revs, and sqeak through brakes. but looks better anyway.

LOVE and i say LOVE the steering wheel. No renault sport logo, but its great. where your thumbs go into the wheel it looks great.

As for the Go.... errr... well. i was immensly dissapointed. Felt so much like a warm hatch. No grunt at all. it was quick... but didnt have the raw punch of acceleration. Was far more refined and power was made steady through the range. Now this engine had 300 miles on it. So is still very tight, but it was so... how can i say... calm.
I took the guy out in mine afterwards, and he s**t himself, saying s**t.. theyve really dulled it down since this one havent they. im sure its no slower, apart from top end... which i still dont get, but they've calmed it down, and its kinda boring. Felt very floaty on windy roads, and bends, but as i say im used to a car being on the floor.

So bearing in mind i didnt like the look of the car, i really wanted to like the drive. and i didnt.

We wanted another comparison afterwards, so took out and 05 plate meggy 225 with 15k on the clock, thats was CHEAPER than the clio, and we all agreed that when the turbo kicked in... it shifted happily. To a point where if i buy another renault... itll be a meggy cup or F1.

sorry about quality of pics, only had my phone.

  182 Full Fat
I should be driving this very same car on Saturday mate. I saw it last Saturday but it didn't have plates on it at that point Did you also see the Red one at the Back of masters? As for the cost of a new 197 once it is specced up. I reckon It'd be better getting a used V6 for 19 or 20k as resdiual values should hold better

yep.. didnt have plates yet tho.

once you've driven it... ask to go out in the blue 225, and i gaurantee you'll agree.

I think you should re drive one in a few thousand miles before make your mind up, is it meant to have a front splitter? if not it need one it look geeky without!

Im very disappointed with the way the exhausts are hidden away compared with the 182. They could have styled them like the new Civic or something without affecting the diffuser

I have been out in the Blue meggy 225 there beofre as I know the finance girl who drives it, Might be able to persuade her to let me have a drive of it tho!!:dead:

  Turbos.
I think it is impossible to judge it against a coilovered Cup. That's the thing about test drives, it's not like you can push it enough to judge things like feedback, balance etc.

nELSON.. youll have to drive it yourself.. im told she drives it like a girl... ;) sniggers.

Rob... yeah i know its pointless comparing the handling to a coilovered cup... t'is the exact reason why i ahevnt commented on the handling... as it wouldnt be fair.

As for pushing it enough ... ;) trust me... it was pushed, i think the way the missus and the dude in the back were holding on round the roundabouts showed that... it was the grin on my face as we approached a large roundabout when the guy said "can you go all the way round and come back in the other direction" that worried him. As for straight line... it was pushed to the limit...trust me.

Your review seemed to be the exact opposite to the guy that drove one the other day. He said it was 10 x better than a 182... Odd that. Although i do like the look of it, i'm still waiting a test drive. If i do like it, i won't go for a full fat model, i'll await a Cup or at least Cup options....

Tyson.

Are you going on the Breakfast run on Sunday Dan?

You should of driven my (standard) 172 and then compared it!

lol, rob, ive driven a standard 172... ive driven nicks alot recently.... im talkin about the GO factor...where it really doesnt have alot. FEELING WISE. just no adrenaline pumping go. im happy to admit therres no point in comparing handling to mine.

Dan, yes it is.

And Tyson... i think that dude had em out on track with the pro drivers, who chuck em about sideways and can make a dci feel like a ferrari.

Just say it you nonce, you know you want to!!!! ;)

I went out in one yesterday and thought it was awesome. I thought the pickup was better than my 172 and I can't wait to get a lengthy drive in one, thoroughly impressed.

  Nippy white cup
I have to say...it looks a LOT better imo in those pics...more muscular than other pics. I have to agree tho...even without driving one I think my money would go on a nearly new Meggy...with a remap obviously lol

Chris

pop down to the shirley branch which is two turns away and they have a cup, a 182 a Trophy and a liquid Yellow V6! looks sex. after seeing it in liquid i have to say its deffo the colour i'd go for.

Dan, the only thing standard about Nick's car is the driver though! :rasp:

Looks better than other shots I've seen, however you first post is exactly why I won't buy it, it's still going to rattle and fall apart after about a year! :dapprove:

  Renaultsport 220T
Great review Dan! I might have to go out and test drive it now myself.

Although, having sat in one, I had kind of come up with the same conclusions. If I was going to go for another Renault, it would be the Megane 225, over the 197. So much more car for the money.

And more easily tuneable.

Newer doesn't always mean better. ;)

still think its looks a bit ordinary, but see what can be done with a test drive, but not expecting too many fireworks until the cups/ cup packs etc arrive

  U/R 200
Hi, quick question, did u take the test drive on ya own? as pics are outside your home im guessing?
Local dealer sent me an email to book a test drive, so will be doing that on the weekend.

No, funily enough they didnt. Mazda happily let me take the RX8 out for a few hours on my own. and so have other high rep companies, but renault had someone in the car for the clio. go figure.... think he wishes he didnt tho.

Like i said to hte guy when i drove the Type R when he said.. er... do you really need to rev it that high..... " if im paying 15k+ for a car, i want to know what it can do BEFORE i buy it".
