Top Mounts - Ktec vs Compbrake vs AST

  H&R + Pole Position'd Cup
Anyone have an opinion or any experience with these?

Compbrake @ £145
AST @ £161
K-tec @ £171

I run AST's on my Cup.

Very good bit of kit, well made and solid, with adjustable castor and camber. Stopped all the knocking and creaking I was getting from the OEM top mounts and also seems to have made the turn in allot sharper.

I've got the Compbrake ones and they're a real improvement over standard in terms of feel and turn in. If you don't want to fiddle about setting up camber etc etc, just want standard geometry then they are ideal.

If you after changing the original geometry then would recommend the AST's, but you have to get them proffesionally set up from what I hear, may be wrong though

wish Id went for the ASTs for camber adjustment. thought they were more expensive than that tho :(

Compbrake ones look cheap I'm tempted to replace mine with solid mounts soon but hard to decide which to go for. The AST's look the most appealing at the moment due to not needing to drill the body (I'm presuming unless someone with them knows different) and allowing for adjustment too. Tough call.

Correct, No Drilling.

Please excuse my ignorance, but do these come with some sort of bearing in them, or are they simply as the name suggest, a completely solid mount?

spherical bearing.

Only opinion i'll give is that the comp-brake ones dont locate properly as they're too small for the hole, and have NASTY rubber gaskets and o-rings, which make them not actually solid, and they wont stay where you put them :S

Can you buy AST solid top mounts for standard 182 with cup suspension? Or is this a coilover only mod?

so if the AST's need no drilling what are them 3 allen screws for? i thought they pass through holes in the turret to the other plate thingy

probably for castor/camber adjustment. swivel the top plate until you get the setting you want then clamp it down. wonder how they stop it moving around without it being drilled?

I'm with Fred. Nothing wrong with mine (oem) and i have been on H&'R s for over a year now !? I do'nt like to change anything about the design they did on the geometrics of the suspension /car.

I do know , when parking in+out , you can save the mounts a huge amount by NOT turning full lock ; turn the wheel a little less . When on full lock , you should look at the top mounts ; they are under a lot of stress !!

the stock ones have been fine round the ring, spa, oulton, donnington, brands, cadwell, bedford

the "real" williams boys use stock

the stock units cause positive camber when cornering apparently! they've only been used for 25years danny, i'm sure they're not as bad as people say ;)

Positive only on the inside wheel though surely? Not a bad thing if that's true, however assume that the OEM top mounts are designed with the Renault OEM geometry: the cup pack springs being the extreme of this setup - once coiled and lowered 40+mm surely this would impair that original function? Wish I knew more about it tbh.

The other thing that has me wondering how good they are is the way Renault deal with the creaking they can cause as they rub on the strut - they take a grinder to the edge of it in a very vague sort of way!

Haven't tried soild top mounts myself but there seem to be a lot of good reports across the board so may give the AST ones a chance (be rude not to tbh ;)) but hey ho as mentioned they may be a waste of time....and the standard parts just like the old airbox/induction kit argument may prove to be a good design out of the box....

So you fitted Coilies and more-than-likely lowered it? That doesn't really make sense?

And that's about it. And it really isn't that noticeable mate. ASTs are superb on mine, albeit they are on a lowly 1.2!

I received the k-tec ones today, they look like quality stuff, unfortunately I'll have to wait another month to fit them since the car is still damaged after an accident :(
will keep you posted as soon as I get them on. I am not worried about the drill stuff, as long as the area will be corrosion protected and periodically checked
