top mount's nut removal?

tried getting the top mount OEM nut off my coilies last night so i could fit my new ast top mounts . . . . when i say "i did" i mean Ben P ;)

anyhoo, the damn things wouldnt budge! i know ben has an impact gun at his, but i want people's opinions on the following;

plan a; go to ben/local tyre place, get the nut impacted off, fit AST's myself, take it to Tweaks for tracking, then goes into Birchdown for service in a couple of weeks.

plan b; take the lot to Birchdown, ask them to fit the AST's, and get it tracked and done and dusted by Tweaks (i believe they get trade rates as well), while it is being serviced by them as well

thoughts?

top mounts are a bit different lad, its not just turning the nut, the thread has to stay still, other wise the spring and central rod of the damper just turns . . .

does it have an allen key center and a nut on the bottom aswell ? like a standard strut?

yeah, the only difference is the suspension, top nut is OEM, so are the mounts.

just need to turn the nut a tiny bit and it will then come off easily, its just getting it started, hence the impact wrench being a good call from ben

cheers Mark, yeah i have a piece of allen key in there at the moment lol

quick bit of glue+plastic will fish it out as it moves with pushing around with a point.

250 is too much for just setting these things up, for my needs anyway. will ask the kevs at birchdown later on.

cheers for replies

when i had to do it on the 172 i put some wd40 on for an hour then get the ring spanner on and then get the allen key with a half inch 8mm deep socket put that on the end of a long extension bar and twist off thats the way i did it mate if that makes sense lol

yeah this was the problem, the ring spanner did not have enough "depth" and we worried about it just rounding off the nut to be honest.

i soaked it in WD40 before ben arrived for around an hour :(

your explanation makes perfect sense, but i think due to them being impacted on, they need the same treatment off!

ill call birchdown at lunch and see what their guestimate would be on setup, might as well make use of the trade prices from tweaks, even if i do end up fitting them myself.

ben, prepare for another call ;)

thanks for the help though lad, good to meet you :)

Took the weight of the suspension on the jack, mounts were clean off the turret.

They have been buzzed on and were last off 2.5 years ago.

I've got the exact same problem... pop it to the garage and get the buzz gun on them is the answer then?

im assuming you dont have the front wheels jacked up! if you do get it back on the floor and it will come off!

yeah as ben said Martin mate, weight of the hubs etc was taken off with the jack under them, car was on stands at the time.
