torque steer





Having just come back to FWD recently i have now remembered why i found torque steer so frustrating, not to mention dangerous. My old ITR used to suffer mildly from it, but the clio does seem particularly bad....is this a common frustration or is it just my over sensitivity to such things?!?!?!?!?

Its never an issue when pressing on and driving hard (or on track) but its when you are casually fumbling along and then decide to nip out or around something that things get a bit hairy, kind of gets you unexpectedly.....

just thought i would share that.....

Emmm, the ITR could be considerable worse considing it kicks in at 6k revs!!! You try tracking it and coming out a hairpin and the v-tec kicking in!

The UKs uneven roads probably dont help alot, but when i first got the clio there were a few moments as you scoot around people....

Mine trys to pull me into the curb sometimes! Two hands on the wheel for me when i accelerate otherwise im f**ked!
 


I get it a lot but it does depend on the condition of the road, I make regular journeys and come to expect my car trying to drag me off the road on particular stretches, it is hair raising when youre just poodling along with one hand on the wheel (bad driving I know but we all have habits) and the wheel is nearly ripped from your grasp!

Wouldnt the fact that the ITR produces less torque than a 182 suggest that it torque steers less? Or am I simplifying things too much?
 


When you accelerate and the car starts steering itself, often towards the kerb, the camber of the road affects it lots too!! Probably a more technical expanation than that but thats my effort!

i was behind a subaru last week and went to overtake the guy - i accelerated and overtook the car and then let off the accelerator without even turning the steering wheel - pure torque steer - tis bad !!!

I had an Alfa GTV V6 3.0 with 230bhp going through the front wheels, thought that was bad but the clio seems to be a bit worse. I have actually grown to love torque steer, it keeps you on your toes!

After years of driving cars with middle to major torque steer, god knows what Id be like in a rear drive V6 Clio! Driven a few S2000s but thankfully not in the rain :devilish:

So what do you do when it happens apart from sh*t yourself? Does taking your foot off the accelerator stop it?

Torque steer happens when hard on the throttle.

Tramlining is a tendancy to follow camber/ruts/painted white lines or an imperfections in the road and happens regardless of throttle position.

The ITR may produce less torque from the engine, however, torque at the wheels is dependent on gearing and revs etc. I had an ITR and torque steer was very little as it has a LSD. The 182 does not seem to do it really, neither does my 270 brake LCR - well maybe a little!!

I find tramlining far worse a problem when the tyres start getting low.

Im not trying to be funny but what difference does a lsd have to torque steer,series 2 escort turbos have got lsd but they torque steer
 


correct me if im wrong, but RWD cars (s2000) dont suffer fromt torque steer as the rear wheels are driving adn the front steering?!?!?!?!?!?

i noticed it quite a bit when i first got mine, u get used to it tho! it gives you peace of mind that your car has potential though!!!
 


I quite like, it makes sure you are completely on the ball when accelerating hard. I always have two hands on the wheel and that removes virtually any "risk" from torque steer.

The only dangerous instance I can think of is you pull out to overtake someone on a narrow road then nail it, the pull to the left could take you a bit close if you arent prepared for it. To be honest I dont notice it anymore, I find its more down to the majority of (uneven) British roads dipping to the left rather than the car mechanically doing it, as on the new bypass locally its almost unoticeable compared to most other roads.

It does put power to the wheel with most grip, but if you think about it, on uneven roads this could exagerate torque steer even more, ie. FRS

What about when you change gear though?

All depends really on how hard your driving
