Track car, Coilovers, lack of funds and Decisions

  172 Race Car
Sorry its a bit of a read....

For those who haven't seen the car thread..........

http://http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=296190

Im currently unsure of what direction to go with my car. Its done now to a good drivable state and im sure i could have some great fun with it in its current form. Im not planning to do anything else (to improve it) for a while, just reliability/maintanence/slightly more weight saving stuff. Need to learn to drive it like it is first but funds are very tight after getting the car sorted and buying us a nice daily driver and i can see me struggling to get the money together for track days.

As some of you may know i have a set of H&R's sat in my spare room that i could sell to release some funds. As if i was to fit them id be replacing bushes, top mounds and joints at the same time, then get them set up properly so id be looking at 400-500 quid to get that done and its just not gonna happen in the near future, thats a hell of alot of track days!

Id rather sort the front brakes out first as they are currrently stock/patern pads and discs. meaning the coilovers could be sat around for quite some time. The car is curretly on apex springs and handles well (on the road)

Do you feel the need to get coilovers? Its widely accepted that coilovers are very good but many people on here seem to do very well without.

I reckon tho that if i sold the coilovers id never buy another set, im not sure i could justify the expense. maybe a change to eibach sportlines and new standard shocks would be a good way to go. My old 172 on prolines was great.

Maybe the decision would be easier if id had experiance of a coilover'd car

At the begining i had loads of plans for the car, like 182 mainfold and matched inlets etc but as time as gone on and the bank balance has got worse ive decided that its not worth changing stuff that isnt going to give me a big benefit. The little money i have is better spent enjoying the car.

Any thoughts on this would be helpful.

i would see if anyone coming to the airfield has coils on theres , and if they do then maybe ask for a drive or a passenger ride ? that could help make up your mind mate.

Definately get some experience before you make the call.

I've got a mate that swears by coilovers, says they of themselves are the best mod he has made in terms of trackdays, however another who says he has wasted his money and could have got a pretty good result from upgrading at much less expense and that it is in the change from standard to upgraded that the big difference comes from and then between coilovers and the rest is a matter of much less degree.

Personally though, i've only not got experience of either.

i think you will sell them, then realise after a few months that you want them...

then have to buy them again.

with regard to a setup etc

mine is booked in at tweeks for the full job lot and its only £100

powerflex bushes are only £100 for the set

so for £200 i would defo keep them!

only 100 quid? I thought you were getting it setup by mark fish, I always thought it was around 250 to have a setup done, corner weights etc

you know you want them fitted!
can't help but think after all your effort it would almost be a let down not to fit them now. but you have to ask yourself how far are you going with this??? if its all the way then you have the answer.....

The whole point is a track toy so sell them and get on the track!

As Mark says you'd be a better driver spending it on yourself and get some track tuition, probably be quicker than you without lessons but with coilovers!

Been out in DazG's 182 today, Before we took the H&R's off. Surprising how well it rides actualy. I expected it to be a bone shaking ride. Body roll around the roundabouts seamed to be alot less. Only a quick first impression.

Mark and John, I fully intend to have tuition anyway. I totaly agree it is the best money you can spend. Might just stick the coils in the loft and forget ive got them for a while and see what happens.

Thanks Guys
