Track wheels and tyres.

Im going to be taking my phase 2, clio 172 round the track a few times this year so need to get some idea for tyres and wheel.

Im going to go for 15inch wheels, was thinking team dynamics 1.2, as there meant to be light weight? I want some full racing slicks for the track, because i can swap them over from my road wheels when i get there. I dont mind if the tyres are second hand, because if i destroy them on the day i aint bothered about binning them. Where is a good place to look, and what size tyres would i be looking for?

Cheers

The MSV days I go to won’t allow you out with slicks because it’s just meant to be a ‘fun’ day, plus I think you have to have a roll-cage if you run slicks. Plus with slicks you’d be buggered if it rained. I and most people go with Toyo 888’s they’re virtually slicks but have the odd groove and actually are fantastic in the wet (on the track). If you’re tracking the car would advise to go for a sturdy wheel rather than the lightest, I and most people use Speedline 2118‘s.

iirc you need a cage to run slicks at most tracks, as apparently there is more chance for you rolling it with the amount of grip they carry.

This is what i was told when i spoke to a guy at oulton park

If you're just doing it for fun, i wouldnt be spending £400 on tyres each time like 888's.

Have a look at prada spec 2's, i got 4 for £150 and they were pretty good in the dry

Not sure about having to have a role cage for them, if it was going to rain id just call it a day to be honest , aint got wet tyres lol. All i really want is a second hand set that i an just try to be honest. Be good if there was a set up for sale on here???

Tracking in the wet is great fun, really shows how your car handles and then you can push that bit harder when it’s dry. Think you missed my point - the 888's are great in the wet on track, last time I was out in the wet I had more confidence with them on than a driver in an R8. So if you got a set they would do you for the dry and wet plus they're almost slicks and you wouldn’t need a cage. There are other Yoko/Dunlop alternatives but they all have different characteristics, as an all-round track tyre the 888's are great. If you don’t do many miles in the car, you can keep them on all the time (as I do) because they’re also road legal (for the time being).

Can u get a set of r888s cheap second hand? I would never use them on the road because iv got 16inch 182 alloys with 4 good tyres., I would only swap them over when im there. So say i want 15inch wheels and toyo r888s with them, what size tyres would i need, and weres a good place to get the?

You would need 195/50 15 and I paid £106 per tyre for my R888's this was from my local tyre guy a few months ago and places like camskill are normally pretty well priced for these.

Why not take your car as it is.
When you find out you cannot go any faster then spend money ;)
Too many on here go mad & never see the benefits.
Too many track prepared cars that have never seen a track :quiet:
I prefer standard tyres as I enjoy finding the limits of my car, also more fun on the edge :D
Spend the money on track days not dreaming of track days.

I done 2 track days last year on a totaly standard setup, im not looking at changing it to see if i get better results. Thanks for the advice, just got to try and find them at a good price now. Are r888s that good?

Im hearing that they make a big difference. Ive done two on road tyres and loved it so its the next natural step i guess. Put it this way last time i was there, there was a blue ph1 that was quick, long story short i was speaking to a guy who knows the car, biggest difference was the tyres (he was running 888's)

Tony i have to say i think Yoko 48r's are a much nicer tyre than the 888's ,

however i suspect the 888 are cheaper , in recent track tests the 48's came out much better value for money

i also fancy trying khumo V70a's which are rated very well by those i know who use them .

That's what I was saying (a long time ago lol)We use Dunlop Direzza's, much better.

888s come up for sale much more often, so I can only assume that's why they're popular.

I know as I bought a second hand set, lasted me ages too. Never had any complaints with them, even in the wet. Although I have never tried anything else to compare to.

Don't you mean cheaper...thought you found the dunlops to take a long while to heat up if the OAT\TT is on the low side? A048s heat up fine whatever the OAT|TT I've found....that's testing with my hand (thermal finger tips) and grip available - not using a temp guage or anything.

But we know how to get them up to temp;)
