Trip computer or petrol Guage

  Bumder With A Buffer

Which is the more acurate??? I recently got a 172 and i havent been caining it honest! After i last filled up i reset trip computer. Ive done just over 100 miles yet the pertrol gauge is almost reading half full!! Trip computer says i got 330 ish left in my tank and my average mpg is just over 38. So which one is telling the truth???!!

the trip is usually a little optimistic but its not that far out. i noticed that in my 172 the fuel would go really quickly and then hover around the half way mark for quite a while......... and then sink again.

When the fuel light comes on, fill up.. soon.. :)

I have had the fuel light come on and still had nearly 10 litres in the tank though.. lol

I was testing to see how far I could go on one tank of fuel. I was driving normally, giving it some stick now and then.

I got to 320 miles and it just started spluttering along not wanting to put the power on smoothly. It did this all the way to the petrol station a couple of miles down the road. I guessed I was on the dregs but the fuel light never even came on.

I think the problem with the gauge is the shape of the fuel tank.

Seems to drop fairly quickly when full, then slow down, think the tank must be narrower at the top.

My first tank in the 182, trip computer said there was approx 70 miles left, when without warning it started spluttering when I tried to pull away at a set of lights on an uphill section of road, and then the fuel light came on - was a slightly nervous trip to find a filling station where it took just under 40 litres - meaning 9 litres of fuel Id put in the prevous day were still sloshing around somewhere! I can possibly see that the hesitation was caused by a lowish tank causing partial starvation on the hill - but I was a little concerned!

I assumed it would probably take the computer a couple of tanks to sort itself out, and know where empty is - anyone else seen the same?

Im heading back to the UK finally tomorrow, so will get to drive it again, so will see how it behaves now its had a couple more tanks through it...
