Trophy dampers from Renault??????

  172 Ph2
I've had a little search through the forum and can't see anybody commenting on this. In the future I'll probably uprate the suspension on my cup and along with the coil-over options (billie, h+r etc) I was wondering if Renault sold the Trophy dampers as a spare. They must do! What happens if you knacker a damper on a Trophy??? I bet they're really expensive and you'd probably be better off selling you cup and buying a trophy, but I just wondered if anybody had a part number for them. I they do sell them, do the bolt straight on to a 182 cup and use the same springs??? Just a thought!

Just buy some ledas or bilsteins the trophy dampers will no doubt cost loads from Renault and you still end up with 4x4 ride height.

Advantages of coilovers are adjustable height, damping, camber, spring rates. You can spec remote reservoirs on the leda dampers as per the trophy ones if you really want them (but unless you are a track hero you dont need them).

Some people may question the need for all the adjustment but if you want a track car or a softer road setup at least you have the choice with coilovers.

They did make some spare dampers for the trophys after people crahsed them and since the company didn't make any more they had to put some back into production.

There very very expensive not worth it IMo best off with Leda stuff or if you want even more track orientated Blistein stuff.

The dampers are covered for 3 years/60k warently which Renault will still pay a reasonable % upto about 100k minimum I'd think.

They should bolt onto a 182 Cup car but none has as fazar as I know measured a Trophy hub.

I've got the damper part number somwhere if you realy want but there very expensive.

The rear springs are apparently the same the front are different.

It's what I thought really. Maybe if I can get a set of springs/dampers from a crashed Trophy at some point then fine, depending on condition and price. I think a set of decent coil-overs would be the best idea though. It would be intersting to directly compare the handing traits of standard 182 cup suspension, Trophy suspension and a decend set of coil-overs back to back. Anybody done this? I've heard great things about all 3 set-ups. I guess it depends on your useage.

Not tried trophy set up but I have had standard, coilovers and now apex springs .. couldn't deal with the coilovers but I think that was due to my lack of understanding about the kit ... :)

Yeh, I guess it's up to you to set coilovers your self! Thats why i like the idea of the Trophy, Renault have done the work for you and are bound sure to have done a better job!

^^ like peeps have said though Mark .. not adjustable so ride hight is standard .. I was looking for looks over handling but now I have started to do track days handling is more important so back to coilovers for me sometime soon .. lol :)

Depends on the coilovers Mark, some have fixed damping so you just set your height get the geometry/alignment done and drive it so you wont be constantly fiddling with the damping. I would however suggest you drive a few cars with different kits if possible. Some have either gone for the cheapest/lowest or generally not thought out the kit before buying and ended up out of pocket when its not turned out how they hope, Maz being one of them. That Said i dont know anyone who's bought H&R's and not been happy with them.

Yeh H+R and Bilstien are a good bet I guess and not too pricey. I Don't really think there's that much wrong with the dynamics of the car as standard and I'm worried that any 'upgrade' may turn out to be a 'downgrade'. This is why Trophy dampers seem to be a 'safe' bet for improvment. I don't want to alter the suspension for looks, just for possible performance gains.

I have ledas on my 182 and they are a vast improvement over the cupped setup, IMO.

Car feels more stable and better balanced, especially under braking. Corners flatter and has better steering feel and faster turn in. I owned pugs before this car, 205gti and 306xsi, both of which 'handled' better then my 182.

Handling is down to personal preference, what I like someone else my hate. IMO the cupped 182 was too soft, especially compared to the pugs.

You get a trade off with a less comfortable ride but mine isnt ridiculously low and still feels supple. I think some people have gone for poor dampers that are rock hard and do not soak up the bumps. I have had a play with the damping on mine and it is about 9 clicks from softest. If you go harder (I think there are 21clicks total) the car can start to feel uncontrollable and to stiff.

I would definately recommend the ledas I have had them on for about 7 months and use them on the road every day with no problems. I did get them for about 900£ in a group buy so I would not have bought them for the 1300£rrp.

Go for H&R leda or Bilstein and get them setup professionally and you will be impressed with the a transformation you get.
