Tuning - The next step

  German Barge

Well as some of you may know the knew williams engine is goin in farely soon, BUT! im gonna have some money left over after the fitting, and need some advice about which direction to take. Money will be around 200 - 300 quid

im thinking about...

1. Ktec Manifold

2. KTR CAMSHAFT KITS
2.0 16v Stage 1 Cams (+18 bhp)

Price: £170.00+vat (199.75) Kit

3. Decat (only 40 quid) but needs doing

4. Pulleys for the cams

What would you lot suggest?

Take it you wont be doing anything to the engine as you know the history of it, i.e. cambelt change.

If thats the case I would not go for cams as you will need to replace the belt at same time so might as well wait for next cambelt change and combine the two. Also vernier pulleys are really needed for accurate set up and that take sit out of your budget, plus a chip would really help get the most out of it all and head work.

For your money I would go for the decat, possibly manifold too.

I would actually suggest, if not done already, you sort out the brakes or suspension as the car will be faster now and handling will be more important. Coilovers would be good to corner better or somenice tarox disks and pads at front to stop.

Ive been told i need a chip aswell to be mapped for this by andy at GDI, so i think we are talking more than i first thought? u cannot simpyl fit the cams then?

you can simply fit the cams with the engine out as this will make life alot easier.

If you want the best deal on new parts contact bondy from this site, he has beaten every quote i have ever had.

No, you can fit and time them in as per manufacturer details, and you dont have to remap, but a remap will see you running perfectly on them. But saying that, the std ecu runs wilder cams paricuarly well!

But depends on that cam profile, as its not specfied by them.

yeh, i know the ECU in my new engine is a prima racing chip (Rajk old lump) so will that affect the cams?

Dont know whether Andy said he would fit the cams without remapping the ECU, so i dont know who i will be able to get to fit them for me..

i cant say if itll affect the cams or how well they run, depends how close to the edge they have put things. But it should run ok.

Andy GDI?

He would probably fit them without mapping, but i am assuming he would prefer to map it for peak performance. I would suggest getting it mapped, but its not 100% essential.

chris

of course we can fit the cams without the ecu map, while we do the engine swap its an easy job to fit them.... much easier with engine out.

ps. (new cam belt etc etc will be fitted at the same time)

what I was suggesting is that to be on the safe side and to get the best out of the engine an ECU map is advisable.

what we can do is after the engine has been fitted with the new cams and prima ecu we can do a power run on the rollers and see if the fueling is ok.... that way you can then decide if you want to map it or if in fact it needs it... with that ecu (prima) you will probably be ok... I do prefer to err on the side of caution....

ok andy, i just needed to double check as obviously its a lot of money for the fitting, so ill invest in some cams, and that would be great if i could get it rolling roaded to test everything is ok, and then decide on having it mapped.

Thanks all for advice, and cheers Andy for popping on :)

Where do u advice i get the cams from?

  GDI Demo 182, Rsi Spider

well we are a piper dealer and offer the club discounts, you may get them a few £ cheaper to be honest if you hunt around.... but there is not much in it over all

we can do the pair for £170 + (thats with discounts)

advice is free my friend... as most people here know, I am more than happy to offer advice.

Thanks Andy, I will have a look around at different cams, unsure whether to go for Ktecs, primarily because they are "Renault Specialists" ? Advisable, or is there no differences as far as the cam market goes i.e. the piper cams?

K-Tec use piper cams - certainly for valvers/willys but i dont know about other models. Off the top of my head their stage 1 cams are piper 270s and stage 2 are piper 285s.

Theres not too much difference between manufacturers TBH - just small differences in profiles. Id say if youre getting GDI to do then get what they recommend!

Hope this helps.

but dont expect 18bhp from just the cams. They state that but ull be lucky to get 10-12 max from em. ull most likely need verniers as well!
