turbo "honking"

  Fiesta ST2
Folks, I upgraded me 1.2 TCE air filter to a K&N 57i induction kit, at a specific acceleration the turbo/engine honks! it can happen at any rpm in any gear apart from reverse. Ive been looking around the internet and ive seen forums saying it could be the blow off valve/diverter can anyone confirm this? alot of people are saying dump valves fix this problem again can anyone confirm this?

Thanks fellas! (and lasses!)

Adam.

also just to let you know this is where i found the information

How do I know if I have a bad diverter?
The diverter is known to have some problems and things only get worse once you increase the boost. You will know your DV is bad when you hear a honking noise. The honking is a sign that the DV is failing to close/seal properly and the pressure of the turbo is squirting by the diaphram making the honking noise. You may also notice a loss in power with a bad DV and boost will drop off in the higher rpms. To fix this problem there are various aftermarket DV's available, check out this page more info on diverters.

You need to remove the "rubber acoustic valve"

IIRC, it looks like this... should be to the left of your turbo.

just found out it happens alot on turbo cars when you change the stock air filter / box seems to have a nickname of "goosehonk" :( its caused by the stock air recircluation system valves aparently...

1 way of stopping the hocking noise is to remove the pipe that connects the dump valve to the induction kit and block of were it would leave a open hole. as the pipe mainly amplifies the hockign sound. i foudn that removing the pipe gets rid of the noise and also gives u a loud pssssst noise

The lads posted up a problem and all you lot can do is go on about s**t. go f**k off back to your gay general chat forum.

Is this "honking" as you call it directly related to the induction kit, I mean if you replaced it with the stock airbox will it go away or has it damaged something? Not that I know a great deal about turbos but If when you put the stock airbox back on see what you recconect and then see if there is a way round fixing it so its quieter.

does sound like the re-circ dump valve opening and having an open filter rather than a box doesn't damp the noise. 2 solutions IMO, get a re-circ valve with a stronger spring (forge maybe) or remove the re-circ system and discover the wonderful world of compressor surge on lift off

^ Makes sense because a mate of mine had this gastly piperX filter on his which made it stupidly noisy on lift off

hope these pics help on how to remove the recirc part of the dump valve

1. locate the rubber recirculation pipe connecting the dump valve to the air box intake.

2. Remove the Plastic pipe that draws fresh air from the out side of the car.( goes Over the top of the engine). this simply pulls towards the engine from the front and is interference fit onto the air filter housing.

3.pull and twist out the pipe from the air box pipe that is connected to the dump valve( Note picture )

4. Unscrew the clamp that is holding the pipe onto the dump valve. this will then allow the pipe to pull off

5. remove pipe and keep hold of for save keeping. you may also want to block the whole left from the pipe to make sure no dust can get sucked in the engine.

6. hey presto !!!!!. you have successfully got rid of the dreaded honking sound and u will now find that u get the "pssssssst" from the dump valve that is favored by many lol.

this is short vid of my mk3 with the above done to it. its not the best vid ever but i will be taking more when i can
