Turbo Noises :D

HI, I've just come back from Ford Fair, And heard Loadsa Turbo'd cars. I knwo cars with dump valves make the TTTTTSCCCHHHH, But Why do some make a different noise, Like a fluttering, I think the correct term is wastegate chatter.

Is this just because the Turbo is bigger, Or is it a different type off Valve you can put on?

I think it's a different type of valve, iirc there is a 1*2 turbo on here which has one fitted. there was a video where everytime he lifted off the gas pedal it made that fluttering sound, they sound better than the sneezing dumpvales imo.

it all depends on the blow off valve ur using. I have a Greddy RS on my S.C 350Z and it sounds way diff than other Vortech superchargers. And the sound also varies depending on how deep the screw is screwed in. Thus, closing it cmpletly doesnt let any air go out so the sound desnt come out. The tighter the screw is the less chance there is u loose any boost while changing gears

All turbo cars have wastegates, it gets rid of excess exhaust gases, this makes a fluttering noise, or you can have a dump valve which goes before the waste gate, building up and releasing pressure quickly, causing less turbo lag

wastegate chatter is caused when the wastegate doesnt open enough to release boost pressure when throttle is closed(when boost is set really high). This is how I understand it. It's not a good thing and can reduce the life of the turbo due to the extra stress.

It's called turbo stall rather than wastegate chatter. Re-circ valves give off a similar sound.

Dump Valves are for Chavs.

'Wastegate chatter' is commonly used but gives the wrong impression. The wastegate does not chatter lol!

The chatter noise is the blades of the impellor chopping through the compressed air in the inlet when the throttle is snapped shut and no form of blow-off/re-cir is fitted.

Old Garret T series and the like are strong and withstand this well, driveabilty is massively improved also.

Modern turbos are more likely to suffer damage so most cars running GT series etc choose to dump the compressed air.
