turning over but not starting and now wont do anything??? help

i have a 2003 clio sport 172

for ages now i hav been havin trouble gettin the car to fire up wen the engine is cold, it takes bout 5-10+ turns of the key. i hav had the sensors checked they are fine an i hav a brand new battery. its slowly got worse and this morning i turned the key a few times then it just completly went ded an a smell of burning was coming from under the bonnet? now wen i turn the key i can just hear a strange humming noise. (the battery is still fine)

could this be my starter motor? bearing in mind that its a problem that has slowly got worse to the point of no turnover..

any thoughts might help

Sorry a bit of clarification - You say "to fire up wen the engine is cold, it takes bout 5-10+ turns of the key" but do you mean the cranking speed is slow or does it turn over pretty fast but just won't cough in to life? I'm assuming it's the slow cranking speed but wanted to be sure.

hiya the cranking speed is normal, sounds healthy but just wont come to life, until this morning wen all of a sudden it just stopped turning over and now does nothing but a wierd humming/spinning sound and smelt a bit of burning

Sounds like you have either flattend the battery or burned the starter out.

What sensors where replaced?

Sounds starter related then. Have you not got a local garage that will take a look for you?

ive not had any sensors replaced, just tested as its been dodgy starting for a while but they were fine
i hav got a friend to look at it tomorrow its defo not the battery but hopefully if you are right he will be able to fit a new starter motor for me. thanks for your thoughts, that has put my mind at rest a lil bit as i was worried it could be something really bad
