Turning the tables on game pirates!

Having been in such a position a few years ago, I really enjoyed reading this...

Interesting, but some developers like EA deserve to fail.

I wish could have downloaded SimCity 5, rather than suffer the abysmal release the genuine one suffered.

I bought the game on the back of that. It's like Game Dev Story with a bit more too it. Addictive as f**k. Hopefully they can earn a decent buck from it.

Depends what site these get put up on, cos when people torrent they won't do so without reading the comments or looking at seeders/leechers.
I'm not disagreeing with you that torrents are bad an all the only reason I torrent sometimes is literally have no money (due to this f**king car) but this won't stop people from torrenting games unfortunately.

Was a nice read though, the community is a lot faster than the developers sometimes, so patches and cracks will occur a lot faster from the community and the developers won't be able to stop this as they will be want to make more money by bringing out another game.

Lol - good find Andy!

Without sounding all holier-than-thou - I haven't downloaded anything illegal in years. Steam makes my purchases so easy these days and I'm still an 'ol stickler for audio CDs, rather than a digital download. And as for films? Perleeeese. Having a film that has clipping audio/dodgy motion sync/Hungarian subtitles, etc - when a blu-ray version can be snapped up at the local supermarket? I simply can't be arsed with the hassle of saving a few quid these days!

You don't sound holier-than-thou (at least to my ears) D. I totally agree and only use legit software. So much so that I've only just upgraded from a 10+ year old version of Photoshop to a newer version! I don't think that people realise just how complex (and how much work goes into) modern software; be it games, operating systems or otherwise. As Spoonie says, stealing ain't cool. Whilst I appreciated that I worked as part of a very talented and creative team during a game's development, I always felt a little upset personally knowing that there would be thousands of people who would simply steal the game through piracy; a game that has just had some incredibly talented people working on it for a year, two years or more. And often a game that is built on years of technology and investment, too. Anyways, rant over! I just thought it was a good little read. :)

An awesome read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I pirate like f**k, because like hell could I afford to pay for some of the things I download.

I don't really feel guilty per se because I just wouldn't get them otherwise so in reality no one loses of gains anything.

You do realise that is complete bulls**t Rob?

You choose to spend your money on wheels, interior for your car and other aspects of your life, and see pirating as somewhere you can save money, it's nothing to do with not being able to afford it!

Unless your talking editing suites that roll in a costing thousands of course...

Just because you can't physically see what your stealing or who your stealing from does not make anyone who downloads illegally any less of a scumbag.

I think he realises that. Its a bit like someone finding out how to get free membership from CS, signing up but justifying it as nobody losing out as they wouldn't have paid for a membership anyway. They tell someone else and before you know it CS has 10,000 extra members with no extra income.

Lol that is brilliant.

I personally always buy my games brand new mainly because I only buy a few games a year and usually get many hours play out of them so feel they are well worth there £/hour.

I try to get all my games through Steam. The only game I know I will pirate in the coming months is Crysis 3, which I would happily pay for if it didn't require Origin, so EA lost a sale there by attempting to stop piracy by using SH1T drm that serves only to obstruct genuine customers.

I see what you did there. And I whole-heartedly agree.... ;)

Origin is the army of Mali in comparison to Steam's US carrier-based Navy of Whoopass....

I'm the same, pirate a lot but if I enjoy it then I'll buy it.

The last game i pirated was The Witcher 2 because there was no demo available and i wasnt sure if my laptop would run it to a decent standard. It did so i uninstalled the copy and bought the Steam version. Best decision really as Steam upgraded everyone to the enhanced edition and i really the developers attitude.

I used to do it much more in the past but Steam changed all of that with its Sales and convenience, and more recently GMG codes :)

Good stuff. Same goes for film and music. I've downloaded some music illegally in the past but always pay for it now - maybe I'm just old fashioned?!

I do and I don't. Mostly don't.

I don't really care about music any more, and don't play games.

So yes, pirated software that I'd never in a million years buy, no one loses anything as such, as I'd never have spent the cash.

And music, I'd just listen to the radio, and do mostly. I certainly wouldn't buy it if I couldn't download it (I'm not a prolific downloaded anyway)

Ohhh - dodgy ground! ;)

You might not like a game or app that you download - but there's a good chance that one of your mates will. Then you'll pass it on to him/her, FOC.

The knock-on issue now is with bandwidth vs. download size. I know people who purely go for blu-ray editions of films to download, because they have an internet pipe the size of the Mersey Tunnel. Back in the dial-up days, you had to be REALLY selective of what you wanted!

Playing devils advocate here. But surely if you pirate something its because you want/need it. And if you couldn't pirate it the only other choice would be to purchase so surely that is the very definition of a lost sale? ;)

lol, that's classic.

I know the developers of Serious Sam 3 made it so cracked versions of the game had indestructible enemies at an early point. Obviously loads of people flocked to the forums...

Idiots.

Shame there isn't a way of stopping people plagiarising their games similarly. The creators of Game Dev Story could have had a field day.
