Tyre shelf life

  Ph1
A tyre fitter months back told me 'ideally' you shouldnt run tyres that are, sure he said, 5 years old, all tyres are date stamped.

Im going to be running the spare alloy that came with the ph1 172 soon and this has the factory fitted Mich Pilot SX tyre on. Tyre is in perfect condition.

Wise to change the tyre ? or is the tyre fitter spinning me some politically correct no need EU rules ?? :rasp:

  Vectra 1.9 CDTi SRi 150
I've been told the tread gets harder as they get older and i suppose this will mean slightly less grip and a bit more road noise. Not enough to make them dangerous, my old man is driving his 406 HDi with a brand new Michelin spare from his 96' plate 406, 12 years old and fine in his opinion.

  MK2 Escort, Clio 172
I've had some new tyres that were sat on the shelf a long time. Put them on the back of my Ibiza 130 tdi sport and it oversteered lovely, if a little dangerous.

Get a new one!
