Tyres 215/40 16

Will be changing the tyres on my cup soon and from previous experience 6 years ago on my Mk1 16v i had coilovers on which transformed the handling. I then added 16inch (17inch rubbed) TSW wheels and 215/40 tyres Yoko A520 at the time. Grip was too another level and the handling / performance etc was not compromised.

Has anyone done this on their cup as i have Eibachs on now and im planning to put the 215/40 on the standard rim.

would love to test it myself too

I know that on my friends Civic they perform very well, but...

Im sure that you will loose some steering sharpness, and probably gain some grip, which doesnt guaranty to be faster.

Let us know if you decide.

cheers

Think i will buy some and try this afternoon, as i said at the top of the thread they worked a treat when i had my 16v. That was 8 years ago and you could get some of the last Yoko A510s.

Will let you all know....

I had these on my fiesta turbo - 7x16" rims with 215/40x16 Yoko A510s. The handling was sublime but they soon went off when they were part-worn and it was wet. I changed over to Eagle F1s and they were far better. Its that 215 width that gives you plenty more footprint on the road - well worth the upgrade.

BTW, the alternative for 17s is 225/35x17 as opposed to the std 205/40x17 option everyone usually opts for. And Goodyear do the F1 in this size! :devilish:

Starting to get some feedback after some miles on the tyres.

INITIAL THOUGHTS

Pressures were at 30 psi initially they felt a little soft compared to the sharpness that you get with the original conti and the std size. After this i increased the preasures to 35psi, this improve the situation greatly. Although i would say that they are still not as sharp as the contis (seem to have a stiffer sidewall) but i put that down to the sidewall charictoristics of the A539s not the size 215/40.

After a little blast

BENIFITS

Reduce wheelspin exiting 2nd gear corners /roundabouts.

Reduced wheelspin from a standing start - big issuse with std tyres

Little/ no torque steer through the gears or overtaking - Eibachs cured most of this though.

Very stable at speed - car used to be bit nervous

DOWNSIDES

You can notice the increased mass at the wheel - rotating mass

Sidewalls are not as stiff - but do grip well when leaned on

The best test would be to test the same brand tyre but in the two differnt sizes but conti dont do a 215/40 16 that i know of.

I would recomend the increase in size as the handling charictoristics havent really changed. The best improvement is the reduction in wheelspin and engine bounce as a result. I would imagine that Goodyear GSD 3 in 215.40 16 which you can get would be my first choice.

Should also be getting some PE2 s 205/45 16 awsell so i will add this feedback when they arrive and have a blast.
