Umm.. oil!

  R.I.P 182
Ok, the oil always says ok on the startup but how do i manually check it? I've tried to get off the engine cover but its firmly screwed, and the "flap" has something keeping it closed.. surely there's an easier way to check/top up oil?

Excuse me if i'm being thick!

Its down the front of the engine near the bottom and its a right b***h to get at!

Don't need to take the cover off, or the flap.

Look for the dipstick on the front of the engine. You need to pull that out and check the level. Has a red top to it (I think).

Edit: It's yellow as said below.

OK, will have a look tomorrow, but with regards to the filling up of oil, as and when i need to top up, how the hell do i do it?!

take off the filler cap and pour some in

leave to settle for 5min, pull out dipstick, wipe it clean, put it back in, pull out and inspect level on dipstick

repeat until your on the mark

oh yeah and remember that the difference between minimum and maximum on the dipstick is approx 1L, so don't go mad when pouring it in!

you need 5W40 oil

and MAKE sure the car is on a flat surface

Fred - i'm cool with how to check it and fill it up hun, i'm just oblivious as how to get the engine cover off or lift up the flap as its stuck good n proper! And i assume you dont have to unscrew it every time?

mikey - oi! Im clever thankya. lol!

Fred - will have to try i guess!! its screwed with 2screws at the back of the cover, tried lifting it up abit to see under and its like plastic tied round the flap to keep it shut, but its more wire as i couldnt undo it. must it always be tied up or if i manage to undo it will it stay shut?

Sorry for all the questions!

I take it the fact mine has gone down about 1/6 is not even worth topping up then?

The oil fill cap is the yellow cap to the left of the engine cover.

Its under the little flap/cover thing that just pulls off to reveal it.

The little flap is the bit of the engine cover with 2.0 on it and a little bit on top for you finger to go in to pull it off, just pull it and it'll pop off to reveal the yellow oil fill cap.

And fill up oil a little at a time checking dipstick as you go like Fred said. :)

If it helps at all I have a photo of when my car came here, it had a missing Oil Flap so you can see what everyone is explaining :)

You can also see that the 4 bolts have been tightened too much on mine to crack the cover so be careful.
