Unpredictable Play in steering

Started to notice this the other day and want to get it sorted asap.

Sometimes when driving i can turn the steering wheel 45 degrees in either direction from the 12'o'clock position before i start turning the wheels. Yet carry on 5 minutes and they steering is solid and there is no play at all.

Had a check around the suspension compnents today as i had the wheel off anyway and i cant see any play in anything, Only realy my inner anti roll car bushes are looking a little worn.

Any ideas?

Steering rack bushes? Get a look down the back of the engine bay while someone moves the steering wheel back and forth and see if there's any movement on the rack

Will give them a look over tomorrow, would a bush or similar cause unpredictable play?
