Upgrading to 3.1 on touch - HELP!!!

I've downloaded 3.1 from itunes - started install......then got an error message saying install couldn't be completed! What!?
So I restart laptop and plug back in - says ipod is in restore mode do you want to restore it with new version of software? Yes please mr itunes.
Will it restore? Will it f**k! Can anyone help, I now have an ipod stuck on factory settings and am unable to restore it from previous backup or install 3.1! HELP!

Yep tried that, comes up with the usb>itunes picture i.e. factory reset. So I plug it in and it asks me to restore and update software, when I try it fails, doh.

sorted it - plugged in to another PC.
have abandoned 3.1
