URGENT CLIO HELP PLEASE!!!

2002 Clio 1.2 16v.

Just fitted a new engine. Battery on.

Keys in the ignition turn it on and.... Fcuk all.

All the lights come on but theres no fuel pump noise and it won't crank over.

Help??

Literally pulled the lump out, replaced with one from a breaker.

Have you checked for a feed to the starter when you turn the key?
Main engine fuse blown? Earth not attached? I now I'm guessing just throwing in ideas!

Are there likely to be any immobiliser issues doing this? Or should it just fire straight up?

The Renault/Clio II Imobilliser is UCH based and wouldn't inhibit the starter motor like some other manufacturers do (They drop fuel pump and injector/ignition triggers)

If all you've done is swap lump for lump and have used everything that was on the car and setup for it then no, there shouldn't be any issues.

I bet its something you've not connected up like the gearbox earth strap(s) or poor connection at the battery terminals

What needs to be connected to the starter? We've got two wires on it. Should there be three?

*Normally* the starter has two wires; 1xBattery supply, 1xSolenoid trigger

Yes. Comes from the loom and looks like its going to the alternator. Got an eyelet type connection on it.

If it's a black wire its 100% an earth... proberly the main loom earth that *should* bolt to the front of the block. Be sure of the wire colour though as you don't want ot ground out a battery live accidentally. The Alternator live will be a thick red or brown (normally 8-10AWG).

Mechanic thinks its ECU related. (It doesn't help that he HATES renaults.... lol)

Have you tried manually earthing stuff? Immobiliser issues can affect starters on mk2.

Its always easier to blame the ECM rather than work thru the problem to get to the actual cause... this is what dealers do. What makes him *think* this apart from it won't start? The ECM doens't control the starter motor function and as that's also down say's to me its nothing more than a power/earth supply issue.

Walk away and come back for another look when its light outside again and you'll sort it.

Theres a 'click' coming from behind the glovebox when you try and crank it over but nothing else.

Sorry, yes thats what I mean.

Stand outside the car and we can't hear anything at all. Sit in the car with the doors shut and we can just hear the click coming from behind the glovebox.

i would recheck the loom daniel,
make sure ye ddn't tear it taking the engine out.
happened to us before.
thought it was the ecu. but it was just wiring:clown:

you will have missed an earth on the block/gearbox

As others have said, sounds like you've missed an earth somewhere.

My 200 did the exact same thing when Renault never connected an earth back up to the gearbox after replacing it.

funny enough ive also had this problem on the same engine, was main gearbox earth, bolts to the front of the box from memory, just under the battery area

i have the same problem on the same engine. all the lights come on, go off as normal, then just a click and no starter motor or anything. i have found the problem and sorted it out. ill get a few pictures and explain the problem tomorrow when i get time. i thought it was just my car that did it!

Not got any photos of this just yet. but basically (im not the best with engine bays) front of the engine block are wires connecting the alternator and the block itself. get someone in the front to keep hold of the key in the turn over position (basically turning the key as far as possible and holding it there. while you or someone at the front of the car (with the bonnet open!) twist the wires around for a bit as there is a faulty conection on mine anyway. I will be getting the soulder iron out at the weekend to sort it out once and for all. hope this helps Daniel
