Urgent locking wheel nut help! Please!

Hello my friends (said in an overly friendly and cheesy way).:p

I went to get some new tyres today, but the garage couldnt get two of the locking wheel nuts off. Ive spent the day going around garages, but to no avail. The problems are:

1. The nuts/key are anonymous and old. Renault/motor shops know nothing!

2. The face of the nut is too shallow to allow a bit to be bashed on (see pics). It only protrudes by about 5mm above the face of the nut.

3. The nuts are proving too hard to drill.

4. Williams wheels allow virtually no room for movement around the nuts.

Help! What should I do? Ive seen some tools advertised on the web - but will they work? Any advice extremely gratefully received!:D

i had the same problem - what i did was i managed to get one of the bolts out and took it to a car accessory shop and played around with some other locking keys. I managed to find one were only 3 of the studs in the key fitted the holes in the bolt - the 4th was miles off - so i bought the key and angle grinded the 4th stud of the key - the other 3 fitted in fine - you could even get away with 2 maybe ?? anyway the bolts came out no problem. Other than that Snap on do a tool for getting locking wheel nuts off - are a good back st garage will be able to get em out for about £30 ish.

Nicky - it may be a Renault one. But I went to Renault and they said they couldnt find it on the system as the number written on it doesnt match up with any of theirs.:( If it helps, the key has "GB56" written on it. My Clio handbook has "990" as the locking wheel nut code.

Ive seen a couple of tools that claim they can remove locking wheel nuts, but am worried they wont fit these nuts.

Heres a pic of the bolt from the side. As you can see, theres a small central part that is raised about 5mm, with a second wider face underneath. I think the tools are designed to fit onto the second one - but theres no room around the damn thing to fit a tool. The upper central face is too small!

ring kierran now on 01772 329909 - he has a locking wheel nut key code book and you should be able to get a part no for one.

When I went to Renault they gave nme the same sh*t...

Try calling Renault Canterbury, they were the guys who solved my quiery. If they can give you the code you can order it from a local Renault to you.

These can be a real pain these Renault ones - coupled with the fact that the williams alloys leave little room for manouvre.

In the past, I have managed to weld a new bolt onto the existing locker...sometimes it holds, sometimes it doesnt. A thinish bolt (M8 or similar) and a damn good weld......all depends on how tight they are....Other than that - it is a case of removing the wheel and hub assembly (which might involve breaking the centre caps and having it drilled out on a pillar drill at an engineering firm. If its the rears, you obviouslt can do this, so its a case of being patient with a drill......doable, but frustrating to say the least.

Cheers guys - very helpful, but some of it sounds like last resort stuff!

Imagine how chuffed I was when I dug out an old bill from 1996, which is for a locking wheel nut key! :D Unfortunately, on taking the part number/code down to Renault they said that the part number refers to a key that looks different to the one I have. :(

Not sure what to do now - Im going to contact the former keeper to see if he remembers changing the locking nuts. Boo hoo.

theres definatly no way of drilling thru the nut and "removing" it from inside out? might wreck the inverse thread inside the part which is on the car (cant think wat its called- the bit in the middle of the disc)
