sat in g/f's flat with my new laptop, just managed to connect to connection called G604T_WIRELESS....unsecured network....this is not the g/f's does this mean a neighbour has not set their system up properly, anyway they can tell someone else is using their service?

You can log into the router and see the machines that have been assigned IP's.
Chances are, if there is no security that they wont know how to.
Although I never set any up on mine at first as I didnt think any of my elderly neighbours would know how to connect.
Had some called 'Dave's Laptop' on there after a few days so had to put security on it.

cheers oggy, i checked and they are using a bt connection, is it maybe they have put in an aftermarket router?

[geek mode on] I drove to town the other night and took my laptop in the car with me scanning for all WiFi networks (hidden or not) and logging the info.
10 mile each way, and it picked up 467 WiFi connections and 103 were completely unsecured! Madness! [cool stud mode back on]

i havent got mine set up with a password at the moment! TBH it doesnt bother me in the slightest, if people want to use my connection then thats fine. My internet is unlimited so it doesnt make any difference to me if someone wants to use mine..... why the fuss?

Because they would slow you down, and also they could download all sorts if illegal s**t, which if traced back would come from your internet connection and you would get the blame!

I pick up 6 seperate connections in my house (they must have one hell of a range, there are only 3 houses within 150ft of here), 1 of them is unsecured.
We connected by accident when we got a new laptop, no use to us as we are all limited severely here (in a village 2 miles from an exchange) but I would love to find out who it is so I can let them know. What do you do, go door knocking?!
