V6 or not!

Im currently looking into gettin a mk1 V6(i know mk2s better but i cant afford it!) but am just wondering what theyre like to own. Whats servicing costs like? parts? etc. how bad is the fuel consumption? Do they eat tyres? any of this kind of stuff and any stories u may have will be a great help:)

I love the whole concept of the v6 from the looks to that wicked V6 i just want to make sure that if i buy one i wont be forever shelling out on it!

Oh and if anybody want to consider swapping one for my lotus elise then email me

thanks alot guys:D

Servicing is about £150-200 at a dealer for even the major service.

They dont eat tyres as long as you dont rag them all the time. My fronts have been on for 18000 miles, and will need doing soon, my rears have been on for 8000 and still look new.

Fuel economy like tyres is ok as long as you dont rag it constantly. Im getting 27.5mpg.

Parts from Renault can be extortion, unless theyre shared with "lesser" clios, as anything specific to the V6 has a 400% markup. However, if you make yourself known on the forum, theres a few guys on here who have vast stocks of used or new parts (including Scott in Chippenhem who bought up the TWR stock when they went into liquidation), or will get you a good discount off Renault supplied parts (such as Clarkie in Exmouth who also has pretty much all the factilies of a bonafide Renault dealership, including diagnostics equipment).

Buy one - youll never regret it!

Hi Matt...........although the service interval is 12,000miles or 2years my car has probably been serviced more than any other........itll be 4years old in September and it has been serviced 4times ie annually..........its now covered 28,000miles.

As for the costs of the above services.........12,000mile service = £125, 24,000mile service = £144, 12,000mile service = £134 and just in May another 24,000mile service = £320 although this did include changing the Coolant, brake fluid and G/Box oil also stripping the rear brakes (sticking) and checking for a creek in the front suspension.........in short servicing costs are VERY reasonable.

You should look for alternative suppliers for brake pads as Reno want £300 per axle...........I have fitted EBC Red Stuff and am very happy with them, they cost £70 front and £68 rear............although I know we can get them cheaper now (less than £50/axle) and there are other suppliers.

The coil packs can play up from time to time.........I had all 6 of mine replaced under warranty and have not had problems since.........I now have an after market warranty.

As for running well its simply the best drive you will ever have had and fuel economy..........Im averaging 26mpg.

Also its not a car for those who are a bit shy............OH NO............its like being a celebrity............people pointing and camera phones being pointed.

So just go do it eh :D............if you have any more questions just ask eh ;)

p.s. Mk2 might be better, but Mk1 is the original, and (IMHO) the "classic" Clio v6!

Ill go along with that.............course were not biased or anything eh :D

Cya Stu

PS Matt have you bought it yet :D

I owned a mk1 Williams a lot of years ago... Feature by feature it was 2nd best in every way to the Williams 2 or 3, which had luxuries of sunroof, electric mirrors, ABS, etc.

Which one is looked back on as the Classic? The Williams 1.

Same with the V6 - the original may well have been bettered, but it set the standard.

cheers for the info guys:D im deffo after one now its just selling my elise first then finding a nice one! i was worried about fuel consumption because i used to have an alfa gtv v6 and it was shocking on fuel! but 27ish mpg sounds ok for the performance ur gettin!:devilish:

ill keep u posted on how i get on and when i find 1

Matt

Just one thing Matt............dont let distance stop you getting the rite car..........I travelled 600miles............thats a 1200mile round trip for mine ..........and it was worth every mile.............or at least so my dad says cause he went down to collect it................Althgough stragely enough I have never bought a car locally all the ones I like seem to be 100s of miles away eh :D

Ill 2nd that - I bought mine from some 150 miles from where I live (admittedly not as far as Stu), and that meant 2 journeys, one to look & test drive, then one a week later to collect. So I racked up 600 miles into the deal, but it was worth it, as the car was straight, and not only that but I saved £2500 into the bargain!

id love to know how you get 27mpg, when i take it steady i only seem to get 17 to 18 mpg. On a motorway ive seen 22mpg before.

Sounds like your cars not running too well if youre only getting that kind of return... Might be worth checking the plugs to see if you have a coil pack down, cos mine had one failing which seriously impacted economy, but since I had them all replaced, its back up to the mark again...

Mine spends most of its time on the mways in 6th gear which I think is why I get surprisingly good return. If Im careful I can get it up to 29-30mpg, but its tedious, and Im not that much of a pennypincher!

I also find that it does better mpg when running on super unleaded. If I run on 95 ron the economy drops to about 24-25mpg.

At current prices (86p/litre at Sainsburys for 97RON), £40 of 97-99 RON super unleaded is getting me 250-300 miles.

Mmmmm Ronin..........17/18...........Id go along with Dave............something not quite rite there, cant add much more like what could be causing it but I recon something is.

Cya Stu

sorry kids but Im with Ronin here. I was getting no more than 10mpg at Oulton park. If Im driving normally, which isnt particularly soft, then I get 16/17 and 22 on motorways.

Wierd eh.............Mitch in the avitar it says 270 is that rite............if yes it would effect the mpg...............or maybe you need it on a RR to find out if its overfuelling............possible?

Or maybe our cars are just BETTER eh :D

Seriously guys, I was getting 26-28 when I first had it, then without any noticable drop in performance or power, the economy dropped right down. Clarkie had the car in recently and found 1 failed coil, and 1 on its way out. He replaced these (and the other 4 as a precautionary measure), and the economy has shot back up!

I do use my car as my main car, which means its not ragged all that often. If you only take your car out at the weekend, and give it hell for a couple of hours then park it back up again, then Id expect you to get something like 20mpg or less...

Ive just taken the following on my phone (so apologies for the mailto:cr@p">cr@p photo). Its averaged 26.4 over the last 347 miles, and thats included some pretty rapid x-country sprints, and had the aircon going full pelt due to the heat! It soon goes up to 27-28 on the motorway, esp once the aircons turned off!

^^^^^^Im the same..........and Its my main........daily use car so yeah that could be it...............good point :D

Also as the mileage goes up the fuel consumption gets a bit better before leveling out probably about the 25 to 28mpg.........my car is on 28,000miles.

Cya Stu

Hey stu, mine never got much better before I did the mods anyway. I replaced the manifolds, downpipe and exhaust box for BenRs complete system. We think its about 270/5 Bhp but Ive not gotten it onto a rolling road yet.

mitch, you need to get your fueling sorted mate, it was puffing out black smoke when you came past me (in the pink car) at oulton

i could smell it for quite a distance

^^^^oh yeah I remember that............so youre the one..............OK this is what we do..............we SWAP exhausts, downpipes and manifolds...........and we see what happens.............and Ill put mine on the RR.................DEAL yeah :D

Cya Stu..............so generous eh :D

I wonder if the mileage has anything to do with it... I bought mine on 36,000 & its now on 43,000. Maybe if Id had it from new, it might have been a different story...

Yeah Ive heard some peeps cars using oil............mine doent use any.......or at least very little.............Ive never had to top it up..........although I do change it very 6months.

Cya Stu

Well Darren if you want one and youve never been in one, same as me before I bought mine...............when you do get in one youll want one even more.............guaranteed :D

Cya Stu

PS Fred are you saying it was both oil & fuel from Mitchs car?

Darren & Dubster- we need more like you! Too many 172/182 owners seem to really dislike the V6 - not sure if its a jealousy thing, or what, but it really grates me as all Renault owners should stick together.

The owners of other brands are pretty united on their forums, but on here the v6 is a real divider...

The Vs are in a different class to the 172s you just have to have the two sitting together to compare its like night and day the 172s(mrk 1s;)) are amazing cars but the Vs just blow them away....
