Values of Nice Examples increasing

It could just be me but it could be down to people spending so much time at home on the internet. I’ve been looking for cars and have been after a Clio but haven’t bought one yet. I wanted a 172/182 or 197/200 and found myself willing to spend way more than I originally budgeted.

Then last week I drove one and remembered how very average they are. What looks nice in pictures, and in your head, may not tally with reality.

Yep. I’ve had a bout 6, and the last one is always my last one. I go away and buy something nicer, comfier, faster, modern.

I then come in here and see a nice little project thread. Oh I really like them still, and I buy another.

After a few weeks I realise how crap they are and sell it for the newer, nicer car once again.

My point is, Clios seem to appeal to your nostalgia, of the early 2000s when they were a decent little cheap hot hatch.

But in reality, they are pretty crap, aren’t fast, rattle like hell and are now starting to be ‘not cheap’ too.

Nothing wrong with Clios. Where you're going wrong is by comparing them to more modern cars, as any old car will fall down in that respect.

It all depends what you want. I've owned and driven plenty of newer and "better" cars since getting into R.S. Clios, but they still have a lot to offer. It's the same as any other older car really, you just have to go into it with your eyes open and be very aware of when it was built and what that means.

Even so, if you like a car that's eager, quite raw, but rewarding to drive fast, they're great (more so than some more modern stuff in fact). If Bluetooth, a squidgy ride and straight line performance are really important to you, it's best to look elsewhere, but you probably could have said similar when they were new too.

I would argue that a well sorted 182 or 200 would be just as fun if not more fun that most modern cars. Pistonheads recently did a comparison between the new Fiesta ST and a 200 and the 200 won. If your after a drivers car and dont care about the day to day stuff then the Clio and other older cars struggle to be beaten.

The low mileage ones seem to be shooting up. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, if I had 5/6k sat around doing nothing - and I don’t - I’d like a sub 50k RB to put in the garage.

That’d be the car I’d go for, RB and Turinis is the perfect clio.
 
We're at a tipping point in the makeup of the owners' community. When people who only bought old Clios because they were cheap, and who consider them inferior to modern metal will move on, fuelled by the easy availability of affordable leases.

In their place will come others who are specifically looking for what old Clios offer and are more than able to pay for the privilege.

My insurance is coming up for renewal and wondered about getting agreed value reassessed. I think given market its now a bit low at £2950 previously agreed. Its a 172 Cup, 1 owner, full service history (every receipt ever), only 97k, belts done 3 times, latest in 2019 at Diamond Motors inc dephaser, water pump, full major service, full professional detail inside/outside inc turini refurb, new pilot sport 3s, new brakes, engine/gearbox mounts, dampers/springs/top mounts, loads of other little bits done. Very nice example of 100% original car inc rare OEM 172 Cup springs. Only modifications are original seat and steering wheel replaced with Sabelt FIA seat and Sabelt Clio Cup steering wheel but originals are stored and covered in heated garage.

What would you say its market value is now please?

Having recently come back to a Clio after 8 years or so since my last one. Values of nice examples are definitely climbing despite a lot owners best efforts to slate any car advertised at bargain basement money.

Agree with what was said about change in ownership profile. I bought my 182 a couple of months ago because I wanted one not because it was cheap, in fact I enjoy it more than my Escort Cosworth and would have happily paid more for it if the market dictated.

It always strikes me as incredibly odd how low-effort some people's advertisements can be.

I suppose we're all different though. The same people who write rubbish adverts are probably quite good at things that I'm rubbish at.

I'll go further to observe that people who can't write usually love to talk. Guy from whom I bought my Megane probably spent 10 minutes on the advert but couldn't stop talking on the phone. Whereas I'm not much of a talker, but will write for England. I'll stop there, lest I digress too much.
