VALVER ENGINE REFITTED

Yeah finally after car being off road for 5months, I put the engine back in this week and started it last night. Almost cried as noise from tappets was really bad and was panicking, but thankfully when oil thinned out they refilled (must have totally drained while head was off block) and silence was golden. New head gasket seems sound, and she doesnt seem to be misplacing coolant or oil, and sounds healthy. Had worried about not skimming the head, but seems to be sound. Flip side of this is I have well over a hundered pics of removing engine, redoing head and refitting engine for a 16v which might be handy for someone doing similar. Might set it up as thumbnail website (any suggestion of free hosting for this type of thing) as a resource for valver owners. Or could email required pics to anybody who needs them. Anyway away to put wheels on for first blast in my valver since I pranged it almost six months ago, FUN

Could you e-mail me your pics fella as im doing a 2.0 ltr conversion in the next 2 weeks or so and am gonna get my head gasket changed, so any pics would be great!

I have adsl so it dont really matter how many pics you send!!

Should i get my willy head skimmed Rockport? How much does it cost to skim a head?

Id like the pics too, please email to mailto:smallap@wildereng.co.uk">smallap@wildereng.co.uk

thanks Tony

I got a willy lump to put in my 16v and am changing the head gasket, should i do it anyway or is it not worth it?

Sorry to hijack your thread fella!!

Probably not worth it mate.

Depends on how the engine was before you got it. Its only a half hour job changing it when the engines out anyway.

£15 for new head bolts and a new gaskets about £18 i think. but if u wanna do the whole lot its about £40 i think.

Up to tou mate, a head gaskets not that big a job if it does go, they have ni reason to go anyway unless the engines overheated so probably no point.

Oh if you want any head bolts I got a brand new set sealed here.

check your head with calibrated straight edge.unless the engine was driven for a long time overheating then your head should be ok.a good engineering firm would be able to check if its flat and pressure test it for cracks.of all the head gaskets ive done theres only been a handful that needed skimming.the renault heads seem to be able to take a fair bit of punishment.if you buy gen renault parts then prices are-head gasket set £110 -head bolts £12each and cambelt kit(inc tensioner etc) £95.never refit an old cambelt always replace it.you only get parts warranty on renault cambelts if you fit a kit.

hello, aint been on site for a while, my own head gasket is cracked from the water jacket and I stopped it befopre she overheated and checked it with a straight edge, but was still crapping it. The hassle with skimming valver heads are the dowels, which will have to be removed and replaced, and you cant get them anymore, so machine shop. Suppose I took a we gamble, but seem to have gotten away with it. Have a degree in mechanical engineering, but still dont trust myself half the time. Have loads of pictures but amounts to 80mb so tell me what pics you all specifically want and will see what is there (hotmail account so cant send more than a few at once). Have pics of most areas you would want to see when doing anything major, was thinking I should post them all on a site, how much space can you get hosted for free on these photo sharing site.

Loads of pics of just about everything, so ask for specifics. Photos on a Mustek G-Smart2, which explains the crappy quality

head gasket bout £18?? More like £150!!!!
i think he means to buy the gasket itself , not including labour. lol
I know what he means, and that is the price Renault want for the Head gasket itself! lol

Rocker cover dead easy to remove (16 10mm bolts, plus leads and cover will need to be removed, then lift it up on gearbox end, and slide out from under camshaft pulleys at other side), just make sure you have a new gasket for putting it back, cause they are a pain in arse for leaking. Used carplan engine laquer and fine art brush, but suspect I would have got a better finish by spraying, but it looks surprisingly good all the same, need to get some better photos of finished result.

Did use heat resistant paint on it too? I used heat resistant paint the got it sprayed, still starting to flake a bit on the edges now.

Also got a low temp thermostat from BBperftuning, highly recommended as my valver runs so much cooler now. Another recommedation is 5gtt turbo new shape heavy duty clutch, a bargain from andyspares, and although a little abrupt (on/off) feels like it will never slip, and almost a track car feel to it, great and cheap!

tonys, used the VHT paint you see it car accessory shops, the one that NASA use (according to the tin). Took manifold off, and went over it with rotary wire brush in drill. Then six sprayed coats of the VHT paint, looks good there, but it does fade a little now its been cured with engine running, still looks good but not quite so shiny, will let you know if its lasting.
