I would drive it... a couple of times maybe. And give the body work a good look over, Also take someone who knows valvers with you (if you can) . Ask about cambelt change and all that stuff.. service history.

you could be buying it from a 40 yr old who likes to mod his cars.. some people look after them. If they have, its worth the price.

To be honest if its been ragged its not a major problem as the f7p engine is designed for high reving action. However just check everything about the car such as any play in the gearbox, steering and rust round the arches. Also the cambelt will need doing immediatly so make sure it has been done or deduct that amount normally 300-350 off the price.

I would say that is worth between 3000 - 3200max

Should be able to suss the bloke/girl out.. if they seem like theyve loved the car and maintained it well, then the fact its been opened up from time to time wont matter... Lets face it, noone buys these cars to go slowly in.. its what the engine was designed to do! (edit: great minds think alike aaronc.. hehe)

On the other hand if he takes you out for a drive and encourages you to rag it from cold, its probably best to stay clear as he obviously doesnt let it warm up himself!

Where abouts are you located?

Maybe a cliosporter could go along with ya to lend their experience?

im from preston in the noth west and the car is near bristol!

i would have a williams but the insurance company im with wont insure me on it till im 25 and if i went some were else id loose 6 months no claims.

i do really like it and im very tempted to buy it!

peel, i appreciate where your coming from, but at the end of the day its whether or not you feel its worth it !

photos are only an indication of how clean it looks, you wont know the full picture till you get there & see it.

mint examples of valvers & ones which havent been ragged sh*tless are becoming rarer, so should hold their value,.

i reckon (from seeing the pic) it is prob worth about 3.5k if its as good as it looks,

as usual you should ask all the right questions (history/cambelt change, bills etc) & and as said before suss out the person selling it.

let us know how you get on !!

Yeah looks mint and I paid 5k for mine 3 years ago.

Seems a bit modded though with superchip and 16" alloys but saves you the cost. Stainless steel exhaust a bonus as should last a lifetime.

Id just go down and drive it and check SH like cambelt, clutch etc. Just changed my original clutch at 80k which was quite expensive, cambelt only about 160 quid but water pump generally needs changing too.

Cambelt should be changed at 72k or 5 years so as this is over 5 years old if it hasnt then haggle price down and dont wait till 72k.

Check all electrics, if it has abs or not, oil pressure, rust on rear wheel arches and for any nasty noises or rattles.

u realistically cant expect to buy a car like a valver and worry if its ever been ragged can you? u sayin ure gonna drive it round at 2000 revs all the time? i think not!

prefere the term driven rather than ragged but yeah i know what your saying

we can go and have a look anyway i dont have to buy it!

  Valver

it says its got fsh and well looked after, go check it out

ask for 12 months tax and test

try and haggle it for 3.5k

then the fun begins ;)

For that money i would buy a Williams, unless you have ur heart set on a Valver. But at the end of the day, its your choice. Look for the following common problems:

Rust on rear arches particularly the drivers side and also on the door sills

Loose steering. Sit in the car and rock the wheel back and forth. If it move without the wheels turning youll have steering column problems

Dirty oil. Should be clean if its well looked after. Walk away if its very dirty

Dirty air filter. Wont cause damage, but another indicator if the owner has neglected it

Broken front springs (seems common)

Rust coloured coolant

Look closely at the wear pattern on the tyres. If they look strange ie worn on outside might indicate, worn / damaged suspension

Check wheel bearings

See when the cam belt was last done. Its every 72k or 5 years

These cars are pretty noisy so expect rattles, sqeeks and whines on the test drive. Clutches are heavy.

And hey Riplash - i drive mine slowly;). Dont want to scare the rabbits too much

I would say £2800 max, not like its got leather or anything.
does leather make em worth more? Reason I ask is that leather on small cars is uaually of terrible quality.

my leather is really good & good quality, and yeah it will be worth more !!

Q, how many ppl always ask on here for it,

A, loads, its very desireable on the 16v !!

i reckon, if its in real good condition about 300.00 odd more for the car with it, u just gotta find one !!

I am biased as I have original leather, when looking for my car I waited for one with it, it is the nuts [IMO] !! Even my Dad, who prefers Classic cars and hates boy racers said if I ever stack it, hell buy my seats.....................nice !!!

to be honest fsh isnt a big issue with cheaper valvers IMHO but if your spending 3.5k plus then maybe it is.

right well the guy said he will put a 12 month MOT ticket on it but the cambelt hasnt been done and he wont do it either! it has 65000 miles

he reckon the car has no scratches or dents just a few stone chips on the front! got him to £3500 for it what dya reckon?!?

I had a black 16V with leather and I can assure you that the leather is well worth having - it was actually wearing much better at 105k miles than my Volvos leather is now at 90k miles.

My old Valver went for £2700 in the end. Granted it did have more miles than the above car, but literally everything was new, it had immaculate paint, refurbished wheels, discreet engine mods and a decent discreet sound system.

I hate to "devalue" that example above, but it really is top, top whack for a 16V without leather. Wheels and so on wont add any value.

Id either get a Williams if youre bent on spending nearly £4k (would be a tatty Williams at that price though) or look hard for a similar 16V at a big saving and save the rest for a rainy day.

Forget it at £3700 without the cambelt! Only costs £2-400, but it all adds up!

the williams aint an option at present cos my current insurance company are wierd and wont insure me on one, tescos however will do it for £1300 fully comp so until ive completed the the year (aug) the infamous valvers is my choice.

but i really want a good one and obviously i dont wanna be over charged and ripped off!

so are you gys saying unless this lad is will to negotiate seriously i should just walk away?!?

Try Admiral. I pay £600 for FC cover on my Williams, 23 years old, 3 years NCB and my mother as a named driver. I decided on the strength of that quote to ditch my existing insurers, who had charged £800 for the 16V I had at the time and wouldnt insure me on a Williams (which is just daft as theyre very similar cars in all ways).

Id look for a cheaper car - doesnt sound like the guy wants to play ball on price.

peel, i know you want a minter, either try and get them to lower the price, or look for another one.

it took me 2 months to get mine, totally original M plate sport blue with factory grey leather, it was on 78k with most of the expensive stuff done, and i paid £3650, 18 months ago for it.

i have never regretted since.. apart from the clutch going (well these things happen)
