valver mpg and relaibility

  307 hdi (powered by derv)
Bit of advice if you would all be so kind.

Ever since i wrote off my 172 last august i have had a xsara and now an mx5(which i hate). Basicly i'm gonna stop *****ing about and just go and buy another clio but this is time a valver.

Few questions i need answering:
1) difference between phase 1 & 2?
2) what mpg they return?
3) do they have common reliability issues or as a whole are they good?

think this is it for now

thanks
shaw

tbh (and I hate saying this) your best off doing a search as your questions get asked every other week, do a search for williams reliability too.

Relaibility depends how good it is its 10 years old so bound to surrber a bit but mine was stop on no complains realy the mods were the problem with mine.

Phase 2 is the pahse I prefere as I liked the wing mirrors more. Plus I feel bad about abusing a limited edition plaqued car.

MPG as with all things depends hwo you drive I got 33 or so 10 mpg on track though much like a new Clio.

its not back from AWT yet should be another couple of weeks but on the drive to his garage the steering went so i think hes gonna replace the rack! and hes also got to do the alternator tensioner and sort out some fuel lines for me from a temporary repair when it broke down on the way to the fcs 06!

Christ, im starting to be put off by these comments, lol.

Dont be put off, they really are cracking little cars. They are like any old school hot hatch, if they've been looked after then they will be as reliable as any car. Try to find an unmodded one if your using it everyday as modifying them brings extra costs (mention above, arb's, tyres etc)

Ive had mine nearly 4 1/2 years and its broke down on me twice, once because the alternator packed up (I ignored the battery light for a few days, lol) and a few weeks back the gearbox gave up the ghost, but mine isnt running standard power, I dont think twice in nearly 5 years is bad for a 14 year old car!?

Go for it, they have so much more charachter than a 172 etc and just as much fun to drive...

Mine did 30mpg.

Got thrashed every day. Got crashed 4 times. Was on 150k miles and it was still on its original cam belt and clutch.

Thats reliability.

£35 would get me around 250-300 miles depending on how it was driven.

  Clio 1.8 16v/Saab 93 Cab
1st post... Hi all. I'm getting between 23 and 27 mpg on my '96 1.8 16v. Only bought it in November (£1000Stg) from a small l independent dealer and had many small problems but it always drove well.

Had it checked out by main dealer who fixed most problems but can't find reason for low mpg (although emissions are high). Due to my low mileage and the fact that valvers are rare in Ireland don't mind the low mpg.

Never broke down

dont get me wrong I love my valver (I've had 3 over the years) but im sorry to say they are unreliable as hell. they just eat money. mines getting scrapped in july because am I hell putting it through another MOT:(

Valvers do have a lot of character, they are rare though (I had one when i was 21) a car which I owned for three years :)
Unless I could find a complete minter nowadays (which mine was back then before I sold it) I wouldn't get one now.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I will say (from personal experience) get one with a stack of service history & bills (as mine did) otherwise the problems will be just around the corner - cambelt, clutch, gearbox etc (the list goes on) also the dreaded rust on the rear arches too (thankfully mine was clean as)
I paid top top mney for it though back then (it was rare with factory grey leather too :) ) I sold it about 2 years ago for top end money too.
