Valver - Optimax, Super or Just Unleaded

Deffo Optimax or Super! You can actually feel the diffrence in mine when i run it on optimax!

Valvers arnt much diff between premium and super unless you got a chip which is setup for 97
If you can afford it then run it on optimax but dont worry if you cant!!

I always try to buy the best quality fuel. I dont think that its that crucial to performance and an octane rating over 95 is probably wasted. On the other hand I do like to keep the fuel system clean by using branded fuel with additives in it and change the fuel filter every 15,000 miles or so.

Im with BenH on this one. Had no choice but to fill up with Sainsburys crappy 95 RON the other day so have just put half a tank in til I next pass the Shell garage.

I filled her up with Optimax this morning, as I have only ever run my cup on it. I think in 50,000 miles, the cup has has about 2 1/2 tanks of 95 fuel.

more octane more go! supermarket petrols should be banned
lol

more octane = less likely to r****d at high pressure, 16v was made to run on 95 the RON has nout to do with performance, the extra cleaning things in it may help a little, if you can afford it do it, if not dont worry

super market petrol is norrmaly SHELL or BP or depending on your area -- ie North-west is 90%SHELL

its not like Sainsbury have a oil refinery round the coner, they just take there tankers to the nearest petrol refinery and fill them badboys UP!! lol

Ive been putting normal unleaded in the Williams.

Will put Optimax in every now and again, I guess..

hmm.....how many times have we seen this discussion before!

I feel that optimax gives a smoother delivery through the rev range but gives no real noticable difference in performance.

I just get it for the cards because we all know that I am the one who is going to win the £100,000 car!!

not much point, the comp just remapps itself to cope with the differenet octane no.... if valvers have comps??? lol

Valvers will not remap for extra octane. Theyre too old and a standard valver is not that close to the ragged edge of ignition advance that it needs more octane, which in laymans terms, means the fuel will burn slower. In a valver the only advantage Optimax will have is that you get free cards with it and that it has engine cleaning additives in it. If there is any sense that the engine is performing better, it is totally down to having a filthy engine in the first place, that is slowly coughing its guts up. The octane makes no difference whatsoever.

If you have a more modern car, eg. a 172, or a turbocharged car that youve turned the boost up on, then you can use the extra octane. The only time I used Optimax on my valver was once I started running nitrous through it. Now its turbocharged I cant run it at LESS than 97-98 RON!

Well, to add my tuppence...

I filled the exs tank up 3 times in a row with Super - unknown to her - and about a week later she said "Its running really smoothly recently".

So I would say go for the Super or the Optimax if youre feeling really flush!

(We used to fill up on Sainsburys super by the way, as it was the cheapest round here by a few pence. No problems with it at all from what I can tell!)

Placebo effect I reckon.

Agree with Nick Read. If the valver ECU is not capable of adjusting to allow for the increased octane rating, how can Optimax benefit?

Ahhh, but she didnt actually *know* Id put it in until she mentioned that it felt smoother!

I know all the science says no it shouldnt affect it, but it does seem smoother and quieter running! :)

is normal unleaded, from a supermarket really that bad ??
no, like someone already said it comes from the same refinery as the petrol you might buy in any petrol station. Ages ago I saw a long long and very tehnical thread about this, mainly written by two guys who worked for two different petroleum companies and they were saying the same thing.

Normal 95 RON.

Like people have said 98 makes no diff as the valver has no means to change ignition timing dependant on fuel. And when you use a fuel that goes through pre-flame chanes slower your essentially getting less energy from the burn transferred to the engine.......your choice.

And im not a big fan of using a fuel that ups its RON simply by running a shed load of detegents which they claim keeps your engine clean. There is a space of about 6" where raw fuel actually travels, before that is jsut airand fuel in pipes, after that its all burnt anyway.

use optimax. feel a differnce. after a few fill ups change back to 95 ron and feel an even bigger difference!

i tend to use optimax 1 in 3 fillups!

And dont even worry your head about it....i use the cheap stuff....no problems ever.

I jsut dont use Murco.....ever! lol
