Valver overheating problems

  Williams 2
Hi,
I think that i'm having a few overheating problems ever since I changed the rad on my valver a few months ago. The fan seems to kick in even on a normal journey. Does anyone know what is the normal operation temp is , and what it should be on he motorway? I have some pics to shows the temps. Cheers, Matt:)

on the temp gauge when sitting in traffic mines goes up to where yours is now (well a bit below it) then the fan kicks in straight away and cools it right down.
on the motorway the needle sits on the 2nd line (the one level with 1/4 tank of petrol)
my oil runs hotter than your does though by the looks of it, above 100 a quite often
mines on 84k.

Took her out for a spin tonight and the fan seemed to be kicking in when on the motorway:( The oil temp was a bit higher that the pic, above 100deg like urs. Just hope it not doing to much damage if the engine gets too hot. I changed the thermostat when I did the rad and I think it tends to run at a higher temp now. Should'nt do any damage should it?

at standstill my old valver would be where that needle is in the pic. Running, the fan should not need to come on!

You haven't got air in it or any blockages have you?

Could be m8, might have to try bleeding the rad. I've done this b4 though when I flushed it and put in some more coolant.

Bleed teh rad, and then let it run till the fan kicks in wiht the cap off the coolant bottle, hopefully shoudl bleed the system too.

Also sounds a stupid question, but check that you put the right mix of coolant in, if its too weak it could be casuing your problems.

If you aren't happy mixing it up get the ready mixed renao stuff from gsf

Cheers m8 :approve: I bought the last lot from Halford. I used 2 ltrs of collant to 1 ltr of water. Does that sound ok?

Yeah, thats what i used, bit more concentrated than what tehy recommend IIRC, but i thought better to make it more concentrated :)

Did you only put 3 ltrs of coolant in, thoguht they took teh best part of 5 ltrs.

When you are bleeding it and it starts to run without bubbles let it run a bit more as there can often be air trapped in there, so let a fair emount run out.

Also noticed you ahve almost zero oil pressure....unless the gauge is fucked

From the pics oil ooks about the right temp, just coolant, i'd put money ont eh fact the fact you have an air lock

oil pressure gauge works fine m8, engine was not running at the time, just turned it off, ran in to get the digi cam and turned the ignition on again. Think I may have used more than 1ltr of water when i changed it last as it tends to go down when it gets flushed round the system. Cheers for ur help m8:cool:

I found the easiest way to bleed my system was to let the bubbles out of the radiator and when that stopped did it back up and then, left the cap off the coolant bottle with enough coolant in the system and then held the revs at 1500rpm until the fan kicked in
Waited for it to cool down and put the cap back on and my valver has ran really cool.

mines running hotter since i changed the thermostat too

quite a bit hotter, not as hot as in those pics but not far off

i had a low temp 82c stat in the car which ive recently changed because i wanted the car running at the correct temp and with it being winter i thought it might have been being over cooled

got a new stat from Renault, 89c one it is....

fitted that and now my temps are a LOT higher, previously the stat would open up just after the first main bar, 1/3rd way up......once that happened it would drop to below that bar and the temps would fluctuate back and forth depending on driving/traffic etc........now, it goes all the way up to the 2nd main bar, 2/3rds, then the stat opens and it drops to about half way on the gauge, etc etc

to me this temp seems too high, both the 1.4RT engine and the GTT engine ive had before all ran around the 1/3rd mark

also, prior to putting the new stat in, the rad fan would kick in at about half way, now it doesnt seem to, in fact its rarely coming on at all

could the gauge sensor be faulty and giving too high readings, and previously it was being over cooled

When I went to a machanic to get some advice he said that at normal operating temperature the engine should be about 90deg, which it was when he tested the coolant temperature in the system. It's when I'm on the motorway or put my foot down a bit it seems to shoot right up near the top, as pictured. It never seemed to do this previously with the other stat I had. Should'nt have changed it:mad:, never mind. BB Tuning do a Low Temp Thermostat that opens up at 82deg,so I may put one of those in and see if it make any difference. Will probaly try bleeding the rad first though, incase there is an air lock.:approve:
