Van insurance help please

  CBR1000RR Fireblade
im looking at setting up on my own next year so i need something sensible. something i can use for work that i can get all my tools in the back and also be cheap to run.

i have taken a fancy to a 1.3 CDTI club 90hp astra van on a 2008 reg.

my problem is insuring the thing, i have had nothing but silly quotes and i dont understand why. the cheapest i have had is for £970 so far wgich i think is well over the top IMO

whats the deal with the silly prices?

why are they so high to insure?

Comercial Vehicles are expensive, unless you go to Footman James, HIC, basically specialist insurance. Autonet Van Insurance is the cheapest for me with a Caddy Pickup :)

looked at Mk2 Caddy Vans? (based on Polo 6n) can pick them up for £800 and have the TDI from the golfs, so tuneable etc ;)

i have just had a quote for £1900, WTF

bearing in mind that i am paying £630 a year on a modified 182 atm aswell, this is silly tbh

Dont get a commercial vehicle, get an estate and strip the rear out or is that not big enough?

windows are a problem, you will see all my tools. the astra van i want has a metal bulk head and a metal cage behind the rear window to stop thieves. not that my tools will be stored in the vehicle, only transported in it

Sky has just quoted me £1080 FC but im not allowed to protect my NCB which i think is b****cks seen as its been protected for 2 1/2 years already.

i dont get why these vans are so stupid to insure, sky's response was "well, normally these vans are insured by 40+ year old blokes that are platerers etc so thats why they get cheap quotes"

so according to sky insurance there are no tradesmen under the age of 40?

mongs.

seriously considering not buying this van now

someone else from sky just rang me back and they were very helpful but unfortunately its still hovering around the £1000 mark

Iirc, the 1.3 engine in the Astravan is a deathtrap. It is stupidly slow with any sort of weight in the car. That is why they are so cheap.

Vw Caddy's imo, would be the better option, although slightly more expensive, they will hold their value.

Get them vinyl wrapped same colour as the car then MDF section the boot from the rest of the vehicle and fit security film to the rear window to make it more difficult to get in as they wont be able to just smash it then
