I know it's not really what you were thinking, but this will sound far better than most stand alone stuff and offers some flexibility.

yeah, if i was buying it for me I'd get something like that.

I'll check with his wife to see if they've room for it wherever she thinks he'll put it.

Last thing I want is to buy him something that he doesn't have space for, and ends up dumping it in the spare bedroom.

Alternatively get a sound burger, it’s really compact and can connect to a Bluetooth speaker/sonos too I believe

You'll not go far wrong with any of the bundle sets from RS. Their customer service is usually spot on too.

yeah just noticed on the receipt that all the items have a 6 year warranty
