Having been through the F4R manual I noticed this:-
The solenoid valve is closed at rest. It authorises
the passage of oil to control the phase shifter in
line with the operation of the engine:
- if the engine speed is between 1,800 and
6,500 rpm,
- if the throttle potentiometer is not at no-load.
WARNING: if the solenoid valve is jammed in the
open position this will result in an unstable idle
and the pressure in the manifold at idle will be
too high.
Although my idle is around 900 (it was about this with the standard inlet and the same now I've set the ITBs) it is quite lumpy and fluctuates by around 100rpm (800-900).
I've got Piper cams but it seems lumpier than I would expect from cams. Also when it was mapped at RS tuning on the standard inlet last year the power dropped off at 6500 with peak power being 184bhp (about right)
I'm just wondering if the solenoid is at fault. Or whether it is just the cams (shouldn't be any different to the idle on 438s) and the standard inlet holding the car back over 6500, and when I get it mapped on the ITBs I'll see peak power at a slightly higher RPM.
