VW Golf GTI

I have been window shopping for months, looking at all sorts of different cars. Decided on a Golf because it's reasonably cheap, it's fast enough and is relatively fun to drive. Decided not to spend 15/20k on something nice and just replace the Civic with something similarly priced, but a bit better to drive.

My usual process would be to meticulously search Auto Trader and eBay for cars within budget, then setup a spreadsheet, decide which ones to keep and then view. This time was a little different, i did my usual search, but something just drew me to this one. Called the seller and arranged a viewing. The advert was pretty bang on, the guy seemed honest and genuine, didn't have any pressure and had plenty of time to go through it, test drive and check the paper work. I agreed a price, but went away to think about it. Called a few specialists to get their opinions, decided to just go for it, what's the worst that can happen?

Work required, a set of tyres and alignment. Tyres are around £280 for PS4 on Camskill, then probably £50-100 for alignment. Little bit of body work here and there, but nothing major imo. Couple of worn switches and trim. I was genuinely surprised at how well it drove, how quiet and comfy it was, compared to the Civic it's night and day. I can see why people like these cars. Engine felt strong, gearbox was perfect, couldn't really find any fault mechanically, however i will have the car checked over to make sure i haven't got a lemon.

I'm sure there will be more mods/tidying up down the line.

Collection on Saturday...

Here is part of the advert and some pics :)

Decent mate. All what needs doing is done. Just keep an eye on oil consumption.

I still have loads of goodies if you want some bits. Ferodo pads, S3 IC, S3 short shift, Apple/Android player etc

Get the gearbox serviced again. Regardless of what the previous owner told you. They cost mega bucks when they break so I’d 100% get it done again so you know it’s been done and done properly, for peace of mind.
Lovely car though, much prefer the cloth to the leather. It’s what makes the Gti!

Looks a great buy mate. I have a 2.0 GT TDI version as a daily. If your looking for a cheap way to upgrade the head unit have a look at a RCD330, it’s a VW head unit that was available in China I believe and gives you Bluetooth, and mainly what I was after was Apple car play, or alternatively android auto. Only £180 [emoji1303].

Cheers, the box feels better than my old S3! Not sure if that's the map of just the gearbox is better.

Thanks! I think the previous owner fitted this stereo with bluetooth xcar link or something I will have to confirm. Worse case I can put my stereo from the Civic in which has all the modern features :)

Half leather with tartan cloth is where it's at.

Didnt think it was worth paying lots extra for the ED30 as I dont have big power plans, car would struggle putting it down anyways. Do like the Seats tho...

Can anyone recommend someone in Brighton to fit tyres and do the alignment correctly?

Nice. Great spec.

I love DSG in my new one. So much better than the Mercs auto box. I’m just preparing for it to break at some stage. Although I’ve read the later ones are more reliable or so I hope. 😂

Thanks, only thing I would of liked is xenons, but not the end of the world.

I had the same DSG box in your car as my S3 I think and didn’t massively get on with it. They need a map for sure.

Looks lovely.
I've been looking at the 5 door versions of these recently but I'm wary of how much room there will be in the back for 2 car seats.
Might have to go and have a look at one.

Ordered a set of PS4s this morning, £330ish fitted with £40 discount from Blackcircles. Having them delivered to a garage in Brighton and will fit them before driving back. Dont fancy having pretty much bald front tyres for the long drive back.

Civic wise, I'm having a tyre fitted today. Its had a little wash and clean inside. Put the standard stereo back in so just need to advertise it. Hopefully get around 2.5k

Has it done many miles?

Yes, it's on the slightly higher side. I was concerned, but after going through the paperwork, driving and speaking to specialists, it put my mind at ease.

Currently got 130k on it.

These go forever if looked after! My mk6gti dsg had 18k on when I bought it almost 90k when I sold it ran more power on dynos and quicker times at pod as miles went on.
Was totally std just get dsg oil done every 40k and keep it serviced if it's all motorway miles it's even better.
Best all round car you buy is a golf GTI imo.

I've had loads of high mileage cars without issue.

I assumed it was leggy with all the changes but that's a good thing otherwise you'd be doing it all..

If on the original K03 that will be up in the not so distant future, especially if mapped. Mine started to go at 132k. Not the end of the world though as the units are cheap enough and not to bad of a job. They come out from the top.

Don't say that! Hopefully it will be OK or it has been replaced in the past. If it did go, I could put a K04 on, but dont really see much point as I'm not after big power.

How much for the S3 IC out of interest? Ballache to fit?

£120 for the IC mate. To fit, drain coolant, bumper off, separate air con rad from OE IC, fit new IC, reverse the first steps. You will need to trim your OE IC pipes as well.

A Mk5 Gti is on my list of cars to own, before I was infected with the Clio virus I was a massive Golf bum boy, I had a mk4 TDI and a mk5 GT 4Motion, if I didn't need an estate for the dog i'd have one as a daily again, obviously as soon as I saw this thread I went looking on ebay out of curiosity.

They hold their value a little too much for my liking, but if you're in the market for one this looks decent.

Been keeping an eye on these for years now! As I test drove one a long time ago, but couldn't get it for the price I wanted... it's on my list of possible upgrades this year but the prices have definitely been creeping up over the past 12-18 months. Was loads of 2006/2007 ones around £3,500 and below but they've all crept up to £4,000 and beyond recently. Annoying!

Yeah the scene tax is quite high on them, sadly I think by the time the dog's gone nice ones will be silly money again, at least FN2 CTR's are cheap, that would be my second choice after a Golf.
