Weard thumping/knocking noise after fitting spacers

  Clio 1.8 16v
Just fitted so 25mm hub centric bolt on spacers on my valver, toke the car out for a spin and found that there was a strange thumping noise when driving. The occurs when i let off the accelarator, sounds like the wheels are loose but have checked them and this is not the case. That was with the spacers on the front, now have them on the rear and the noise occurs alot less only when i went round a roundabout that i noticed it. Any idea what this could be? Has anyone had the same problem?

Any help would be appreciated

cheers

Sounds like you have the wrong hub diameter spacers, 25mm is bit excessive to me. I would take them off and drive the car to see if the clonking stops, if it does then youve proved it's the spacers. If you carry on driving as it is it's likely the wheel bolts will snap.

first throught would be the wrong hub diameter as said, even 1mm difference will give a sort of clonking noise as the wheel rotates. i read about it alot on the volvo forums when the s40, c30 guys take wheels off older cars, as the s40 has a 63.4 hub and most other volvos wheels are 65.1mm bore. Its so common the volvo specialists sell spacers of thin metal to take the gap but you need to replace them every time you take a wheel off. it might not be the bore of the spacer on the hub it could be the bore of the wheel on the spacer. as said go back to just wheels and see if the noise goes away.

another thought is, are they on 100% flush to the mating surface, even though you got the nuts to torque up if they are even slightly proud, even surface rust on the wheel or hub could cause a little slop and a clunk.
