Weird gearbox problem...

Just put in a JC5 130 box from a 172 to replace my JC5 130 box in the 182.

Now cruise control works in all gears except 5th. And don't really understand how/why it's not working in this 1 gear...anyone any ideas?

Also, can anyone tell me if 1500rpm in 5th at 30mph sounds about right?

Any help appreciated, Jon

2nd question, yes sounds about right.

Can't help with the other question though, sorry.

Sounds like the abs module isn't liking the info fed to it, it calculates road speed etc and allows the cruise to operate in its required field. It's definitely the same gearbox as before? Same 5th gear ratios and everything?

That sounds like the issue then. He put a longer 5th gear in but failed to mention this might happen. And I can't even feel the difference in ratios anyway. Fail!

So do you think if I changed the 5th gear from my old box that may cure it?

I'm gona check where my revs are at 70mph as well. As I'm not sure if this new gear has changed anything apart from no cruise!

Following on from this. Have spoken to Martin at Agency and he is sending me a standard 5th gear to swap with the one he put in

Does anyone have a guide on how to change the 5th gear in the box? I haven't looked at my old box yet, but my dad had a quick look and says it looks like I need a puller to get the selector arm off then remove the gear

Anyone had to do this before?

There is a puller for the 5th gear hub and a shallow one for the 5th gear. A female torx set, can borrow my kit if you like.

I asked about getting a longer ratio in my 172 when I had it (given it needed a rebuild) but was told it wasn't doable.

I've got the torx Matt but is there a special puller required for the gears? Or will any sort of puller do the trick?

Best way to increase fifth is to use a ph1 box, its got a taller diff so raises all the gears.
And that must be the way to do it then Chip, if you put a Quaife in it though would that change it again as you said it is the diff that raises the gears?

There is a risk of chipping the teeth so go easy, there is a special tool for the hub, I have the special tools for the job if you need them.

if you fit a quaife, you are more than likely going to use the crown wheel from the supplied gearbox, so not really going to affect the gears by just fitting a quaife ATB.

Yer I haven't looked at it myself but he said the gear is very brittle so could be interesting. Thanks for the offer Matt will keep it in mind if I cant sort something out my end.

As you can probably tell I dont know a lot about the technical ins and outs of diff's and gearboxes! Might have to keep the Ph1 option in mind if I have to get a new box in the future. Will have to weigh up the pros and cons between longer revs and lower acceleration performance.
