For Canon bargains see the Refurb Outlet.

I'd recommend going to a store and holding some different sized DSLR's. You might like the smaller Nikon D40/60, Canon 1000/350/400/450D or the larger Nikon D50/70/80 or Canon 20/30/40/50D.

If I was buying with your budget I'd check out a second hand 30D, throw on a new 18-55 IS or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 if it doesn't come with a lens and get shooting. Might even have money over to add a longer/wider/faster lens or a 430EX flash. That or pick up a refurbished 400D or find a bargain 450D if I liked the smaller camera's.

Remember lenses are worth spending more on over bodies.

Check POTN for some second hand bargains, gotta dig around for UK stuff.

Some of my pictures, shot with either a 350D or 40D and one of the 6 lenses I've owned over the last few years...

Got a canon 40D with canon efs 10-22, canon efs 17-55 f2.8 IS, canon 135mm f2. L, sigma 10mm f2.8 fisheye, sigma 50mm f1.4, sigma 1.4x TC.

if you are on a very tight budget look at the sony A200 18-70 kit which comes in at under £300.

awesome pics there bluepete!! what have you got that took those pics?

Thanks, should say in most of the pictures, either a 350D or 40D, then a 10-22mm, 17-55 f/2.8 IS, 18-55mm, 28mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8 or 70-200 F4L! If they are close up they are one of the primes + extension tubes , Kenko Pro 1.4x teleconverter and sometimes 430EX flash. If they are landscape they are probably taken with a Cokin GND filter.

Well every photo on my portfolio was taken with a D200 (and some with a D70s).

Tbh, you're not going to go wow just over the quality of the pics, DLSRs are much more than better quality. Its the usability - not taking 10 seconds to focus, and not waiting 10 seconds for it to take a pic!!

Canon 50d, Canon 10-22, canon 17-55 IS f2.8, canon 50mm, canon 70-200 f4.0 L, canon 17-85 IS.

no point in posting pics to decide on a camera as its more about the lenses and the photographer than anything else.

that nikon d90 seems to b at my budget and is a higher pixel than the others... would this camera be a good one to go for without buying any extra lenses etc... for now of course :) i would get more lenses etc in future...? am still a little confuzled at all these other numbers LOL

It would be a good choice yes, specially if you think you'd take advantage of the video feature but the Mega Pixel count means sweet f-all.

Wander along to your nearest Jessops and give it a hold along side a 40D. Although the 18-105 VR lens would probably be a better starting lens than the Canons and works out cheaper.

nikon d60 18-55mm lense, straight out of the box and stuck on auto mode

Any DSLR will get you great pics. Its the user that makes the picture, not the camera/lens.

I think you're spending a lot more than you need too really. Nikon D40 would suit you fine for now until you learn some more and also save you £400!

D40 really is fantastic for the price!

Not too much. The main reason I have it so when someone asks to see some of my photos, I tell them to go there :)

just went to jessops and seen this, i think your right, spending more than 500 would b silly, i seen this bundle kit and thought it seemed quite good... what you guys think (link below)

http://www.jessops.com/online.store...ikon/D60 8GB Twin Lens Bundle-75676/Show.html

Tough call, I don't know much about the D60, AFAIK its a D40 basically, still missing mirror lock up, uses a 3 point AF system, full lens compatibility, stuff you might not understand now but could bug your pretty quickly when you do.

Unless you prefer the smaller camera the D80 is screaming out for that money.

Forget the 100 buck Tamron lens they throw in, work with the camera a little and get a better telephoto down the line. Then again I don't shoot Nikon but I'd imagine people will agree that the D80 is a better choice?

Both can use Sigma mate, they come in both fitments. Sigma aren't exclusive to Canon.

oh :S lol i just went off what the guy said :S, ....still, i hope the 1000D was the right choice..

Aye it's not a bad camera at all, great entry level, a mate just got one and its very similar to my 450D. Which I love.
