What does the auxiliary belt do? do you really need it changing?

  Red Clio 172 MK2
I'm not paying £200 for some monkey to change a belt.

Do you really need them changing? What is it for? What happens if they snap?

Comes off the alternator, and charges the battery.............thus if it snaps, only battery power, too loose and it will squeek and not charge properly, too tight and it will damage the alternator!

Fit a new one yourself.....about £10 for the belt.

Just wait until it breaks then put a new one one.

Its all right, you car can go hundreds of kilometres without a water pump and alternator and power steering pump. On the back of a tow truck.

That's what I thought. Balls to paying £200+ for Renault to fit one!!!

I admit I know nothing about the Mk2 engine's but £200 is loads just for a aux belt,
If you don't want to do it just go to a local small garage and get a service+aux belt.
Or even better go rentech, GDI or one of the Renault specialists.

I thought psp and wp are run off the cambelt???????

  Weeman sucks ****
Good luck fitting it yourself, you'll have to take the front bumper off and work around the aircon!

Alternatively find a cute renault technician and give him a chewy, then he might do it for free!

That's another reason I love my cup, no aircon!! Jacked the car up, took the wheel off, removed the plastic lining and simple job to reach the bottom pulley for the belt. And with no aircon you can reach all the way down from above :)

I bet Renault charge the same labour rates for a Cup and a FF car as well!!!

Well... whilst I'm here, shall I scrap off the Renault 36K (or 35, can't remember) service and do it myself or get a smaller garage to do it?

PM me your email address I'll send you the file saying how to do it.
I'd change it at 36k if it breaks it can take out th cambelt de to the desing of the cover being useless. if it does braek you'll have no power assisted stearing the coolent pump will stop the aircon conpressor will stop (if you have one) and the alternator will stop working.

Yeah, I've had three of them and it's never cost that much on the invoice picked up by Accounts ;)
