No real preference to Nikon or Canon.. so convince me either way

Or perhaps an alternative to the two

350D Official re-furb for sub 200. Maybe even get a 30D for sub 400.

Then the rest is up to you, depends what you want to shoot.

Want a cheap prime add the 50 f/1.8 or with the saving consider the Sigma 30 f/1.4 or Canon 50 f/1.4

Want flash, get the 430EX, a good charger and decent batteries.

Want to shoot motor sport put that saved cash into the Sigma 70-300 APO DG

Want one lens to cover it all fairly well, get body only and then buy the Sigma 18-200 OS

Although to save postage Jessops sell it for £299 so you can go have a go with it before you buy too.

Lens is £130 from purelygadgets.com

Slightly over budget, but you get 2 lenses and the 55-200 vr lens has won best entry level telephoto, great review of it here:

To be honest, thats my set up (when the lens arrives!) and for me its perfect! Just the right amount of zoom and a very light and compact package.

Thats the one cookie! But as above.... go abuse currys/jessops and have a go with the canon and Nikon.

  1.8 Civic EX
It'll mainly be used for holiday snaps, pictures of cars, oh and aeroplanes in flight :p

and spying on the neighbours with a telephoto lens ;)

defo worth going into a shop and "having a feel" it's amazing how different they feel to handle. My Olympus E400 is so small a light compared to say, Johns Nikon D80 which is huge and heavey..although trying to find a nice lens for my olympus is a challenge if on a tight budget..

Under £300 is a Good Price for a D40, I'll be buying one soon :D Can't wait!!!

D

dick

not the prices, the restriction of not being able to use them all more than anything.

I'm not a pro, I've barely even played with DSLR's before so something like being restricted to those kind of lenses doesn't bother me in the slightest

ah ok dude, good luck and have fun, make sure you report back to us with your pics!

and as tempting as it is, no zooming in at neighbours bathroom windows!

Cookie, you getting an extra lenses?

Just ordered the 55-200 VR after reading nothing but praise for it on flickr :)
