Hi Guys, im a relative newbie on the forum but had a few Clios over past few years..After being asked to post some pics of my latest 172 after i had encounter with a grass verge and a wall I thought I would abilige..hope you all dont find em too distressing..
put it this way i will never question the 5 star ncap ratings again!!

The car took all the impact and all i came away with is a bruised, swollen hip and a few cuts and some other bruises...indeed very lucky!

Basically,going round a sharpish left hand bend about 50mph,nsf tyre blew and steering went completley, sent me into the left towards the grass, couldnt do anything but hold on,the car slid on the grass and i hit a 4ft stone wall and thats what flipped me..did a flip and a quarter (totally missing the near side of the car) and ended up still sat in my seat holding the steering wheel, laying on the drivers door..managed to turn off ignition as car was still running and climb out through the passenger door..

Wow, good to hear you're not seriously injured!

People can say what they like about Clios, but for rattly French hatches, they're pretty damn tough when it comes to crashes. Seen many a Clio that's had pretty much all the bodywork obliterated but the passenger compartment has held up well.

the wheels not touching the floor though so the tyre will still look round in most cases, unless its been ripped to shreads!! a blow out doesnt always mean EXPLOSION, happened to me in my focus ST, large bolt went straight through the middle of my tyre tread, tore a gash straight down the tread about 6 inches long, immediate deflation of tyre and mucho swearing, the tyres were one day old toyo's, man was I angry, but I was on a straight road and only doing sensible speeds (below 120 lol) and it was a rear tyre, so easy to control, just a bugger to get recovered (no spare wheel!)

anyway, well survived driver!! lol

I rolled my first car many moons ago mk5a escort 5 door, and I can confirm, they do not last anywhere near as well in a roll!! lol i'll try to find my snaps and scan them up for all to see, you'd be amazed how much an escort can look like a Ferrari with just a little tweaking of the roof line!! lol

I stand corrected on the ncap rating....there was about 4.5mm across the tyre so bout half worn..

NSF tyre - Fairly intact
Season - Evidently winter (cold)
Road conditions - Moist/Muddy/Greasy
Speed - 50mph (claimed) 60mph + more likely

I am all for a spirited drive down a lane, but sometimes uncommon sense and a degree of caution is required, epecially if the roads are sh1tty.

Verdict - User error.

I'd agree with this ^^^.

A blowout on the unloaded inner tyre while going around a bend...isn't likely to spear you suddenly inwards and up a verge to summersault over a wall.

Is the "NSF tyre blew" an excuse just to save face? Realised the tyre blew in the process so you could blame that for your loss of control? What really happened?

the account i have given is correct,to be honest if id of made a hash of it and it was my fault i certainly wouldnt have posted it on a forum...but its to be expected that there are one or two doubters..its purely a warning to others that you need to double/tripple check your rubber as those four small patches are the only contact you have with the road.and also as a bit of reassurance that if it does go all pete tong then your in a bloody well put together motor..

any ideas what actually caused the blow out, for example have you inspected the tyre and any visible sign of damage?

I too had a tyre go dodgy on me, same situ it was about 45-50 in a 182, around a corner.. except all that happened to me was the stability light thing flashed on the screen and the back went a bit wobbly. And the tyre was almost completely flat, propped up by the sidewall!

There's a split just above where the rim edge is..right at the base of the sidewall.
