What is the point of dash light dimmers

ave had this question for years but y do u have a option to dim your dash lights?

So you can see them when "other" light reflects off the screen on the dash.

Running them low is meant to make the bulbs last longer.

Useful in towns at night when artificial light bounces off the screen and makes seeing the dials, especially with 172s white dials.

I always find the max setting to be too distracting at night, so I like to have the dimmer set at about 50%. Does that answer the question?

always thought they were to reduce eye strain on long night drives, say in scandinavia where there are no street lamps etc.

There for when you have a lady in the back seat and want to dim the lights to create atmosphere I think.

i find that when im driving at night on the motorway the clocks shine in the drivers side window and they areflect off that, i dim them just to stop the reflection!
