What laptop for £500-600

  182 Cup
I managed to get a bluray sony viao laptop from the argos outlet store on ebay, £900 laptop for just over £500, all that was wrong was damage to the cardboard box it came in hence they couldn't sell it on the shop floor, absolute bargain and an awesome laptop.

I was just about to say VAIO as well. My GF is a real techy person and basically spec'd the best Vaio she could for a grand. Runs seriously quickly (more than I'd ever need) but obviously she needed that, I'm sure the lower E/F series would be ample. Only thing I can't get used to is the keyboard.

TBH spec means little for laptops unless you plan to play Crysis or do video editing. Which of course the overwhelming majority of buyers never do.

Build quality is everything. Spec is for people easily impressed, who don't mind a laptop made from recycled ice cream tubs.

How is that better, it's worse spec?

a faster i5 processor, same ram, larger hard drive, same size both LED screens, different graphics chipset but still much on par with each other yet its going to be leagues ahead build quality, and its £100 cheaper, hence my better for the cash quote.

agree with what roy says above too.

Yeah tend to agree, just the HP has dedicated graphics, but TBH this one won't see any type of game.

My HP is 3 years old and still fine IMO.

intels latest integrated graphics arnt bad btw they will quite happily stream 1080p and watch bluerays etc which is probably all you need if not gaming?

you must have one of the lucky ones! their business class ones arnt bad but the usual mainstream stuff ive had nothing but bother with in the past helping people out with!

I'd go sony if possible, the build quality for a PC is actually half decent.

As said above, it's pretty much 100% build quality, the small spec differences won't be noticed by the every day user.

ive not used a sony thats been released in the last year but used a few that are 1 to 2 yrs old and generally Lenovos are better built although the sony is in no way badly built!

Find a student. Get a MacBook Pro.

Agreed! Can't beat a MacBook on build quality and battery life, if that's what youre after.

Iv got a Sony Vaio and I wouldn't buy another another one, its got a bluray drive I never use (Netflix and other streaming services are so much easier). Many black screen of death and WiFi keeps disconnecting. That just my experienece.

I've just been given a new fancy HP laptop from work with integrated Intel graphics and it plays quite a few games on medium settings with native resolution and a decentish frame rate. Not brilliant, but you shouldn't write it off.

Buy a toshiba.

I bought one 4 years ago and it been heavily abused, dropped, had hours of abuse and it still works perfect. The only thing that's gone wrong with it was a line of dead pixels on the screen. The line of dead pixels was caused when I took the laptop in the bathroom when I had a shower.

(In case you're wondering, yes at times I have tried breaking it but it's still going strong)

Its rammed full of music and has been used for achedemic work for a few years, it's only used for emails and the web now but it's as fast as the day I bought it.

Id recommended a toshiba as cheaper model laptop to anyone tbh.

I was looking at the ^this^ on monday, and thanks to this thread checked ebuyer before buying...

...saving me £50 and although i didn't pay extra for delivery it arrived the next day. 24 hrs on and i can't sing it's praises high enough.

Absolutely - it's no macbook air, being thicker and less aesthetically pleasing, but at only 1.4kg's, a 12.5" screen, with a fairly decent/equivalent spec and at less than half the price it's a bit of a winner for me.

Buy a refurbished MacBook Pro.

Better than any PC rubbish made from creaky recycled plastic bin lids.

It'll last you years too.

Once you use a mac you will realise why people say this, they are far far far superior to anything else
