What motorbikes can I legally ride?

  Z4
Proper noob question this, I'm thinking about buying a bike just for jokes with a mate really, IIRC you can ride one on a car licence up to a certain cc?

What is the cc? And after that one would assume you just need to take a bike test etc yeah?

  PH1 iceburg
Upto 50 cc if you have it on your license but you still have to take a CBT test to ride it on the road.

Depends how old you are.

If you have taken the CBT you can ride upto a 125cc with L plates on the road.

If your under 21 you can then take a bike test to allow you ride a 125 without L plates.
If your 21 or over you can do the main bike test allowing you to ride anything.

I'm 22, so if I were to take a bike test, in theory I could then go out and buy a Kawasaki ninja and tax/insure etc it legally?

That would be epic.

OMG so much mis-information here.

If you passed your car test before 2001 then you can ride up to 50cc without l-plates.

If you do a CBT you can ride a 50cc without plates or a 125 with l-plates.

If you are under 21 you can pass your full bike test and ride up to 33bhp (around a 250) you are restricted for 2 years

If over 21 you can go for direct access (DAS) and ride any bike of any power

Before anyone tells me I'm wrong, I'm a biker so know what you have to go through

Yes. CBT then full test. Then you can scare the living daylight out of yourself!

Well if you are a biker then it must be true.

The way I see it, if you want the proper test information about biking, you don't ask a car forum, you search it yourself. I too am a biker.

Ok I forgot there is an A1 test and A2, the A1 meaning you have to ride a 125cc if your under 21, the A2 meaning you can ride upto a 33bhp bike.. apologies..

BUT

You still have to have L plates on a 50cc bike/scooter if you've got your CBT but still not taken a test.

Not if you have a full car licence, the CBT validates you moped entitlement (catagory P) on your car licence, a moped licence means you can ride a 50cc bike that doesn't exceed a speed of 32mph without l-plates

Only if you took your car test before Feb 2001..

Which maybe I mistakenly presumed not many people on here would of done..

Ah well, fair enough.

I'm not under 21 nor would be seen dead on 50cc scooter so sorry for the mis-information!

  MCS R56
Yeah fair enough, but they will tell you what I just did, I was trying to save him the trouble.

I know and I know you are right but I would have just gone to the DSA website and checked. Instead, he got loads of different info from guys who don't know.

I have been thinking for years that id like to have a 125 (just to see how I get on!)

So I could do my CBT and ride one with L plates I assume?

Yes, you can ride a restricted 125 on L-plates with a CBT at 17

You can ride anything under 100cc unrestricted on l-plates with a CBT at 17

^^ Test isnt that hard.

Riding something like an R6R... quite a bit more difficult and I speak from experience!

tbh the tests aren't that difficult. module 1 all your manoeuvres so that leaves module 2 for a safe road ride.
as for the r6...not that difficult, its my first big bike and im doing fine...just take things easy:cool:

I agree, get your test done. I did the old test which didnt have the modules, and it was a doddle tbh.

Now my chance to show off my bike (600rr) :D

I dont really know much about bikes but i may be moving out soon and would like to be able to get around cheaply and quickly
im 20 with 2 years car no claims (if that makes a difference)
How much rougly would insurance be on a 125? Also how much are they to buy and run?

  Clio 1.4 RT
When you buy a 125 get a honda or yamaha, anythin but a chinese bike. I bought a chinese bike for £400 when it was 6 months old, a month later it cost me £250 to replace the engine which failed after just 600 miles. After 3 months of owning it I sold it for less than £200. Basically buy cheap, buy twice.

Insurance for you could be as little as £75 depending on location etc. As for fuel costs, mine did 70mpg however that was heavily tuned (and probably not learner legal lol) On a cbt at 17 with no experience it was costing me £300 to insure an import but I live in a dodgy postcode.

I hope you do go for this as bikers are better car drivers, just remember it's perfectly safe so long as you remember every other driver is out to get you

Lol i know about the car drivers, used to ride my bike around 10 miles everyday, little different but i get the idea!

The only thing stopping me getting a bike is the fact my dad has said "if you get a bike i will disown you" hence the reason i have to move out before getting one haha

Lol, my mother was the same, I just didn't tell her, she kinda guessed when I walked in one day in leathers and a helmet.... oh well. I guess she got the last laugh after I crashed twice in the first week

Well im 28 :)o)

Passed my test in 1999 (i think).

So I can do a CBT test and ride a 125 for a few months then decide if I like it to do the next modules??

How much are CBT tests and what does it involve?? I mean I can ride a bike (well years ago could..but haven't ridden one properly for about 10 years now!)
