what oil for 172?

  Silver 172
going to do a service on my car later so im wondering whats the best oil for my 172? usually use 10 40 but im sure i read somewhere your suppose to use 5 40 for the 172s?

I dont see why it being a bit thinner when cold being a problem. When hot 5w-40 and 0w-40 are the same thickness, SAE40.

Cheers

One of my cars burned the 0W40 pretty quickly also .

I now very happily run the 10W40 from Motul , was very noticable with engine-noise just NOT being there anymore on cold running. This Motul 300V is also highly recommended by the Oil-dude ;) (Opie oils UK)

Except he (and Renault) have decided over the years to change from 10W40 to 5W40 . So next time i'll be putting in the 5

0W40
5W40
10W40

all fine to use, they're all THE SAME VISCOSITY AT 100DEG C

the 0, 5, 10 refers to the viscosity at 0degC, the lower the number, the lower the safe cold temp it can go down to (ie 0W goes down to -25degC IIRC, 5W -15degC, 10W -5degC - figures aren't exact its to convey my point)

so if you say a 0W40 is "too thin" - no, its thinner at 0deg C, but EXACTLY the same at 100degC as a 5W or 10W

1L in 6000miles? that's way inside tolerance, wouldn't worry about that, unless you mean 600miles (ie 1000km)

some of our Gallardos do over 2L a day, but they are flat out all day (well depending on the customers!)

no i mean 6000miles or 10000km
i see that in uk the clios are driven twice of Turkey the mileages are too high for us. maybe thats why u are burning that much
my 172 is 2000 and for now itis 120k km and i never add oil in 10k
maybe 1/2 litre goes in10k

from memory i believe Renault's allowable tolerance is 1L per 625miles (1000km) but i maybe wrong there

its not often i see F4R's burning oil, normally they use nothing, some of the track stuff might use a little

i did a 2000 172 yesterday that had done 112169miles, was a perfect engine!

I just found the general consistency to be thin, almost like water compared to others. Also it would always knock a light out on the oil gauge and if you parked on any form of gradient you could see at least couple go out. When checked manually levels were fine. More evidence at its thin consistency maybe?

Also if its thinner at start up then does this mean theres less engine protection? or technically more protection because it gets round the engine quicker at cold?

It is thin when it's cold and that is probably when you have seen it, but that means it flows quicker around the engine when cold to give better protection. The 'general consistency' is not thin except when thin, as it needs to be an SAE40 at 100C or it isn't a 0w-40.
