What Options are there for a Ph1 172 Engine and Gearbox?

I'm planning ahead. Car's done 143000 miles now (it's fine at the moment). But if it breaks do I specifically need another Ph1 172 gearbox, a JC5 089 (because of way the speedo is driven), but I can choose any RS Clio engine as all 172/182 engines match the gearbox. Is that right?

The Ph1 and some Ph2 172s (like mine) have an input for the speedo so you'd need one with this. As said though I'd get the box rebuilt as it'd cost roughly same as 2nd hand box and you'd get a warranty.

Get the box rebuilt if it goes. Costs about the same plus would be like new

I need the car every day so can't afford for it to be in bits while the box is rebuilt. So I'd like to buy one now that's been rebuilt and get that fitted. Plan is to then get the old one rebuilt and sell it to offset the costs.

143,000 miles? How's your engine held up for all those miles? Any real problems?

Engine is great (touch wood) and never had any major problems. The throttle body has been a major pain in the ar*e, but I got one a couple of weeks ago for 17 quid and it now seems lush). I bought it on 27,000 miles and have used good qual oil (real fully-synth oil) every oil change at about every 5,000 miles and gearbox oil is also changed at about every 15,000 miles. I had the clutch replaced a week ago although it was still working fine (replaced because it was likely to go in the next few thousand miles). Crackin' cars and it's been used on track/driven hard to defeat BMWs etc - but not for every minute of the day. Just a bit of transmission noise showing now so I think I'll replace the box.

would it not just be cheaper to get a cheap car for "just in case events?", rather than having a spare engine/GB lying around. Second hand GB and engine will set you back around 800quid ish. Plus you'll be looking at similar mileage on them if you do get a ph1 engine. 172 cup also used the same system I believe, but all others used the ABS ring. I've been told recently that the car can be reprogrammed via CLIP to take the speed off the ABS ring rather than the GB, but I keep meaning to see if that is the case.

Not a bad idea, that. Yes, don't fancy the clip idea (might just decide to un-do itself when it's not convenient). Buy runaround, fix gearbox and flog runaround.

Interesting that a 172 Cup engine and gearbox is a straight swop (almost anyway, would just need to attach the different alternator/aircon bits off mine).
