Just a quick question... Have you checked the VIN number matches up with the registration plate? For all you know, that reg could belong to a white 200 that lives in Aberdeen and you've been left with a stolen car.

HPI'ing a cloned plate will just show that the real car is straight.

What if the genuine owner if the car is away in afghan? He left his new 200 with a mate to look after?

It won't come up as stolen or anything! Not until the owner gets back!

I genuinely hope for your sake that the car is legit. It's just in my 40 years on this planet I've don't think I've ever seen anyone get such a deal without there being some sort of catch.

You said the bloke couldn't sell it but then you say you've already been offered 8k for it. So obviously there are people prepared to pay 8k so the bloke that you swapped with is talking out of his Harris.

If someone with a £10k car can't sell it for more than £2k he's a complete and utter fucktard. We buy any car would of given him more than £2k.

  A special one.
Id of giving him 5k, along with the line of many others.

Its like me giving my ph1 away for £200 just aint going to happen.

Oh and whats with the trying to get people to add you on FB, that dont sound right.
There's no way on this earth that someone would have given him at least 5k for that.

I'm calling shenanigans!!

A log book loan or something been taken out which is why he wanted rid perhaps? I know fools and their money are easily parted but taking an 8 grand hit.....

8k log book loan taken out 10 hours before he swapped the car? Get's 2k, 10k in total.

New owner gets chased for cash money in a few days when the loan finishes processing? Saw it quite a lot on that bailiff program?

ok ok i understand everybody's comments and know why some have said what you have said
but i wasn't born yesterday.

due to some of the comments on here, as when i was offered the swap i was a bit erm iffy about it all and did all the checks i could do. even went the local police station and showed them all documents from hpi checks to V5 etc.... the looked at them and said all checks out also.
i have been to my car and checked everything over again VIN number etc.. even engine number.
i have just done another HPI check again on https://www.hpicheck.com
also rang them to confirm everything and asked if a logbook loan would show up on the checks.
they said yes the logbook loan would show up on the check and i have done 2 checks on the hpi site 1 on the 8/09/13 and 1 today

still all come back clear

hpi2.png
sorry if it not come out right i had to open the pdf file HPI.com sent me and copy paste in to a bmp file

you lot have really got me thinking again now even though i have done everything within my power to check this car out.
i am now even thinking of getting rid and selling it on for my peace of mind.
cheers guys

This VRM is reported as being exported on 25-Mar-13, the HPI Check Guarantee does not cover vehicles registered outside mainland Britiain

There is your problem.

When did you buy the car? If it was say 3-April-13, it could have had a logbook loan taken out against it whilst it was in Jersey, an area which is not covered by HPI's information. HPI info is only useful up until 25th March '13, after that, well anything could have happened.

If it is 100% legit, the seller was clearly a few bricks short of a load.

If you do sell it on you'll make a tidy profit you can use or put towards a normally priced 200 with Reacro's and whatnot,
then at least you won't always be waiting for bailiffs to show up and repossess it.

I'd be selling it straight away.

I once bought a BMW off a traveller for the few notes in my pocket. Once i'd phoned the police to make sure it wasn't stolen or a wanted car then checked all the numbers it was shifted on. £800 profit in a couple of hours. Tidy.

But a finance agreement taken out in Jersey and then exported to the UK should be fine no? not sure if that agreement would be binding for them to take the car if it's in the UK now.

Sorry, i meant that as he lives in Guernsey (not Jersey, slight typo), the dodgy previous owner of the 200 could fill out the forms to export the car from England on the 25th March (hence that date on HPI), then swiftly get a log book loan on the car prior to exporting it a few days later.

Dodgy owner then swops it for a Impreza once he gets there & buggers back off to England. The OP is none the wiser as HPI cant update properly after the date the car is 'exported' so the logbook loan wont show up, in the unlikely event that it does, it was done after the export date of the 25th so isnt covered by their guarantee anyways.

People are dodgy, there are ways of doing things, ie how many 2.5 year old Mercedes E-Class taxi's do you think lose 200k miles before their 1st MOT at 3 years old, especially now that all the mileages/MOTs are recorded on a central database ...

the previous owner has not left the island he still lives here and i see my old car driving around everyday

OP just go an arms the seller and make him fess up as to why he let it go so cheap. Not sure about the log book loan though, If they cannot locate the car, which if it's changed to a different plate etc they will never get hold of it, the original seller will still get chased by the finance company.
If it's true I'd be more inclined to say something is horribly wrong with the car, low oil pressure or something and it's about to die, easy to fake just dash board out and stab the bulb.
If it's all legit it's spot on, lucky c**t imo

ok just been on phone to my mrs brother in law, who i said works for renault as a sales rep. he did 1 of the hpi checks on it and he says his system use's uk and channel islands systems, so any finance oweing on it would show up. even if a logbook loan was took out here or the uk.
like he said to me. they take in part x's all the time and have to checks on some of them and they on guernsey plates, that have come from uk (some of them)
also stated in a previous post of mine, the car has been checked out mechanical in the same renault dealers and its all spot on no problems.
but now like i said before you guys have got me thinking again.
i have messaged the previous owner and asked him again why he did what he did, his reply was that he wanted a lower insurance group car (as his insurance was due up soon) his girlfriend has not long had a baby and wanted a 4 door. also he knew the car was due its 2nd service soon, meaning more money to pay out.
he has always wanted a subaru, so he says.
also i have spoken to his girlfriends father ( just say the family is not 1 to cross and will take no sh** )
i told him my concerns about the car and he told me, if anything comes of it and he finds out this guy dating his daughter is doing cons, then he will be leaving the island but not by boat or plane (you guys know what i mean)
so here i am sitting here wondering what to do next, do i sell it and pocket cash and buy another car or keep it

Or don't worry and just enjoy it.
Sounds legit to me. The fella is obviously just a r****d who was desperate.

These people are just jealous they didn't get the deal of a lifetime! (As am I)

Well done to you.

Still makes no sense as he still could have sold the car for 8k and bought what he wanted.

I'm certainly not jealous. If its legit then ill be the first to say well done to the OP and I'd be genuinely pleased to hear of someone getting a real bargain.

It's just that in my experience, personal and work, you very rarely get something for nothing in this life.

To the OP, I hope I haven't come across as being a green eyed monster it's just being old bill I'm naturally suspicious of things like this.

Fingers crossed (genuinely) that its all kosher.

You sound clued up at least mate. I started by thinking just keep and enjoy but people have made some good points and now I'm not sure either. It's good that you've already spoken to the police, I'm not sure what else could be dodgy about it really? But if you're having doubts now maybe it would be better to get rid.

Your mate said cheaper insurance on Impreza but he could have had thousands in the bank if he sold it so it can't be anything to do with money.

If you're buying a car and have to speak to the police about it then alarm bells should be ringing. He could've part exchanged it for 7-8k FFS!

The funny thing is, if the OP had never bragged about this car and the deal, he could have moved it on for monster profit quicker.

I wouldn't buy it even for 5k now.
