What should I look for on a 172

Ive never been near one before but have always wanted one.

I am going to see a mk2 tomorrow which has 30k on the clock and is up for £6600. What should I look out for?

Would I be stupid to buy the first I saw?

Id look around , i paid 7k for my Mk 2 with 8000 miles on the clock. Bought it from a Vauxhall Arnold Clarke, its an import but it was in mint condition , full uk spec

Just realised the search feature defaults to a 1 month search. Found loads over 1 year. Muppet.

Cheers guys.

Does £6600 sound ok for 30k?

i wish id bought the first one i went to look at.that was before i found this site...so wasnt wise ! have looked at alot since which have been rubbish!

Iv got a 172 cup at the minute, and before that had the 172 and with both iv had problems with the exhaust. Both had to go back to the garage several times because of this.Apparently its a common fault with them,so just have a quick look for signs of wear and tear.

The one I am going to see has a subtle twin exit stainless with slight cut into the rear bumper. This has a lifetime guarantee so will I still see a problem?

  Cup 172

yep..check for rattles..although when i bought my cup i took it for a test drive, changed down to second........SOLD:D

Was that your first go in one?

That is what I hope happens tomorrow.

I currently drive a Chavalier 2.0 16v which is no slouch but I have had it for nearly 3 years since I was 20 and I want something with some real pace.

It is only the standard exhaust on the 172 that I have had problems with, best of luck for tomorrow-hope you come home with a pearler!

This is a full fat 172 but I have always wanted leather so theres no way im going for your poverty spec;)

I intend to extract a few more gees from it over the coming years so I dont think the weight saving will really matter. Plus I have a lightning left foot so, unless I am face to face with a Cup of equal spec, I cant see most things touching me.

The only reason I went for the lighter cup is because girls carry a lot more luggage! I miss my 172, i loved the leather, and the air con was nice, but on the other hand the cup has the slight edge on handling iv found Its just the interior that lets it down.

You cant get the best from the handling unless your on a (private empty)track though, where as you always have to use/look at the interior. Horses for courses, but frankly apart from the Cup alloys and spoiler theres not a single reason id ever think about changing from full fat.

Not to say the Cups are bad by any stretch, just not my bag.

Im impressed with both, my cousin spent £7000 more than me on a type-r ,and there really isnt that much between the two.Give me the clio any day.The cup is supposed to be track-biased ,but your right, you dont get the full benefit from this travelling to and from work every day! The cup interior is basic to say the least, and whats that stupid foam stuff in the boot that replaces the spare wheel? It doesnt even work!

I must admit that the rattles do get damn annoying at times but then other times when youre having a good blast you dont even notice them, It all adds character doesnt it?

Watch out for the angry swarm of bees in your glove box at about 4k revs........
