What's the best way to bed in new discs and pads?

I recently bought a set of OE spec front discs and a set of Mintex Extreme pads for my 172. I have read the stories of people experiencing squealing with these pads but I'm sure that won't be an issue.

Now I need to know what would be the best way in which to bed these brakes in. I seem to remember BenR posting quite a good guide but I have forgotten where I read it.

as you'd normally brake but try to avoid heavy braking from speed for the first 200 odd miles

drive up to 90mph then brake to 60mph do that a few times

The way I was taught was to do a couple of hundred of miles of gentle-only braking (apart from emergencies, obviously lol) to enable the discs to bed in and the pads to have any peaks and troughs in the material worn down, then do several high-speed braking runs (e.g. 80-30 x 4 then 1 100-40) in quick succession to get the pads bedded in.

mintex extreme :( i'd be surprised if they don't squeal
They were a xmas persent so I'm not too fussed really as they didn't cost me anything. What are they like other than the noise?

To clarify on the bedding in process, drive normally for 200 miles or so then go for 8-10 highish to mid speed braking runs?

don't do any heavy braking with mintex extreme pads

they have nearly stuck me in a ditch on a few occations

my pagid fast road were 100x better with only 1mm of depth left on them

do them on an empty motorway...
60-30 11 times
70-30 11 times
80-30 11 times

in between each set of 11 drive for 2 miles with no braking.
then repeat again.

The whole process of bedding in pads is alot less complex than people, and i indeed, used to think.... all u are doing is putting a layer of pad material on the disc, and then heating the pads up so the agents used to bing them together are "baked" out

Are they really that bad, even in comparison to stock? Anyone else have any experiences?

Is that as soon as they are fitted or after a specified number of miles of steady driving?

  Shhh
Do 100-001 9999times..

then 001-100-001-100-001 9999times..

Just fit them and drive the car, they will be ok.. I very much doubt you will do excessive braking for 200mile...unless your doing a trackday.

Try some 60mph to 10mph stops a few times very hard one after another don't stop dead on the pads though do this 10 times or so then let the brakes cool off that enough for most pads.

Pad from new have protective coatings so you need to burn these off ASAP realy (which is what the above does).

edde speaks the truth, its also what BenR reccomends doing and i have to agree, its always worked well for me even if it is a bit smelly!

  Turbos.
Everyone seems to have their own theories and techniques.

I would personally brake gently for the first 200 miles and would never use them hard initially. Thermal shock can ruin the discs. But this is theory..i've never done it 'wrong' because i can't afford to be right!

I would then brake from high speed to say, 10mph, about 8 times. The more extreme the pads, the more stops i would do.

I have been recommended once to allow the brakes to cool down after a gentle drive and do the high speeds stops again.

Mintex and Pagid are brand names for the same company, funny how they produce such a love hate response.

Did they come with instructions?

By far the best way, not only do you need to get the coating of the pads, but also anything that has been left on the disc. If you don't get smoke you arn't trying hard enough!!!!!

But are they pants because they don't stop the car the car or because they squeak?

I think you can pick up the Extreme's for £30. Im using the 1144's and they are mint, stopping power is superb, I do have bembo discs and lines. But defo make you stop. Mine squealed quite bad, but seem to have calmed down now.
