Whats this? And why would there be fresh oil on it?

Could anyone tell me why there would be fresh oil coating this? And what are these two metal bits doing? (noob moment)

Two places had a thin coat in oil.

Under the sump there was some oil coating the bottom, and possibly a couple of spots on the tray under it.
The Plugs for Engine and gearbox oil were bone dry so new washers are doing their job.
No oil running down from oil filter so the new ones not leaking.

I wouldn't worry then, it's a 10 year french hatchback after all

Left is the bearing carrier for the os driveshaft, right looks like it's just the mount for the dog bone. Is the top cover leaking down the back of the engine?

Which bits the top cover? will have a look.

The Inlet isn't leaking oil as i had that off to check spark plugs were still tight.

Do not remove top cover!!!!!

Yeah, sorry should have made it clear. Don't remove it, just carefully clean around the back of the engine and top cover. Then after a few days check it again and see if it's leaking.

Good plan.

Will take inlet off, and give the surrounding areas and back sides and front a clean with some engine degreaser. will do it at the weekend.
