Whats this...?

  Renaultsport Clio 172
Just been out to check fluids etc on the 172FF. Noticed a loose component, so what is it? It is the large metal block at the front of the engine at the top. It sits immediately behind the top of the radiator attached to the engine block and looks like a heatsink. It seems to be fixed onto 2 or 3 studs, although mine was hanging on by 1. Anyone any idea whether it is a vital component that should be sealed against the block (as in it is a cooler for some air/fluids) or is it simply an overengineered cover for the electronic gizmo underneath it?
Any help wouild be gratly appreciated.

Thanks for the replies. I figured it was some kind of guard. I'll have to get a nut from somewhere as I only have one. I've done it up as tight as I dare without overdoing it!
