Wheel bearing collapsed! Why

Driving home from Durham the other day my wheel bearing shattered, luckily when i was nearly home but had to drive a few miles to a garage with a very knackered wheel. When we got the bearing out it just fell to bits!

Anyway, a few months ago a bloke at a different garage warned me that alloy wheels on renaults in particular, cause wheel bearings to wear away quickly. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Can it be caused by tracking not being done? As mine isnt tracked up at the moment

Also, the hub suffered slight damage from being driven with the knackered wheel bearing but ive been told its ok. Should i worry about it?

Larger wheels definetly make them wear quicker.. and lowering.

Stop it happening? Get standard wheels back on.. hehe.

both of my front bearings where shot to pieces on my old 1.2 !! Just the way i drove it i think !! think one of mine is on the way out on the 16v aswell !!

what u gotta think to your self is that bearing was made to with stand force from a 13/15 steel/alloy wheel putting a 17 on would increase the force put on that bearing there for making it wear much quicker, to the point where it wears so much it brakes up, happens only way avoid it to have a standard car i guess

alloys shouldnt put any extra strain on it to cause premature failure, they are built to wishstand alot of forces. Jibberish to an extent.

I bet it was robably incorrect fitment, or a non O bearing.

There is a new hub for sale in the others for sale section, pick that up as a work carrier will see your bearing wear out quicker.

was the bearing noisy before it collasped?very strange it would just collaspe without there being any warning signs first.they normally collapse due to being excessivly worn or incorrectly fitted.

there was noise but it was in bits about 15-20 minutes after the noise started. like a groaning, knocking, banging, dragging noise, lol, thought my exhaust was on the deck too as it was stopping the car moving a bit, but turned out to be the wheel bearing

dont think they are incorrect fitment, they are et35

get a gen renault bearing and someone decent with a press to fit it for you.maybe just a one off then mate.
