Which block for my ported head

  172 exclusive no 172

I have just been quite lucky and picked up a valver engine for £30.

The main and only problem at the minute is that the big ends have gone.

The Head has been ported and polished all ready so i am trying to source a bottom end.

Looking for more power i am undecided what bottom end to use are the megane and williams bottoms different??

also am i right in thinking that i will need to get the ecu change or would some thing like the UNI-chip be ok ??

thanks lee

The 2.0 16v as used in the Williams and earlier Megane is called the F7R, the 1.8 16v as used in the Clio/19 16v is called the F7P.

The 1.8 makes 137bhp, the 2.0 150bhp - so not so much in terms of power. But the 2.0 has a much more linear power delivery than the 1.8. Its more torquey at all revs - not by much, but its there at lower revs.

So you can see why the 2.0 bottom end is one of the more popular engine conversions for the Clio 16v.

If I were you, Id hunt for a Meagne 2.0 bottom end, as its essentially the same as the Willy one and will be much easier to find. There were only ever 1200 UK Williams!!

Good luck!

mat of mine is scrapping his 19 16v cause its a little tatty and has a blown head gasket. Was maybe going to take his cylinder head and do work to it. If I get the car I would have a 1.8 bottom end for you. Going to look into it, only problem is the car is 100 odd miles away plus a ferry journey, so not sure yet, would need to look at haulage charges since I couldnt tow it home, going to look into it, will post if I get it as there is always people needing bits, I need a head and I have plenty of space.

i was thinking that, why not repair it?

not exactly a huge job since teh motor is out already.....

or why not stick the head onto your existing bottom end......?

Cheers all for the suggestions now to look for that megam bottom end.

The engine in mine was rebult at the end of last year so wanted to leave that as a complete unit. mainly as a backup if this one which i want to use as a project blows up in my face :)

one of my friends here suggest that a small turbo conversion would be the way forward and run it with small amount of boost.

Would there be many problems with this cos i dont want to folk out loads for forged pistons. This engine that i got came complete with manifold and wiring loom so my friend reckons that he can fabricate a mounting for the turbo on to the manifold....

With regards to repairing the bottom end. i could repair it but at the end of the day i am looking for a bit more power,

2ltrs i think is the way forward and would keep me happy for a bit will give me a little more scope for developing more torque or some power at a later date..

Rebuild it with flat plain cranks and uprated bearings, read in one of those tuning mags that this stuff is availabe, lightened flywheels etc.

LAD MOTORSPORTS in lancashire specialise in that stuff for pugs, they used to do alot for renaults too but dont know if they ares still going maybe they can help you.

Doing this will get you the most power/accelaration advantage if you reduce the revolving weight and you have the ideal opportunity to do this sort of mod.

It will be moderately exspensive mind. How much power do you want though?
